“You own this house,” Evie held up the picture. Her voice had a hint of frustration and anger to it. “You bought this house and you let it go to seed. Why?” Evie looked at Aedan with a penetrating stare. So much of her childhood was caught up in that house. Finding years ago that it was not only sold but then discarded like it meant nothing to the new owner had been a source of ire within the family. Numerous times they had tried to find the buyer but it was always a dead end. Now Aedan was telling her that he was the one who bought the home.
“You haven’t been there in a very long time have you? I had that place complexly restored like five to six years ago. Though I do recall rumblings the first few years I had before I had it completely restored. That was you causing my lawyers headaches? I just assumed you were some stupid landmark society trying to get the house protected.” Aedan admitted, he even purposely slowed down it’s restoration to just spite them. Aedan would never let the house rot, sentiment wasn’t something he had in spades but this was quite literally the very last part of his parents.
He knew his mom visited the location, it was honestly the only place he knew had any connection to his mom period. “My mom… she had this picture on her. It one of the few things I ever had over her. I wanted to own the only piece of her past I knew existed so I bought out them home.” Aedan admitted, feeling uneasy as he spoke. What was Evie getting at? He didn’t know where this was headed but felt like it was getting to close to his past.

“Your mother,” she said slowly as if the words Aedan spoke were devastating news. Adjusting on the couch Evie felt as if the room was spinning. Her face grew a bit paler and she moved slowly to the edge of the couch as if she were about to get up. “Your mother visited here,” Evie said almost in an accusatory tone spinning the picture around so that Aedan could look at it. “When? When did she take you here?”
Evie McGarrett
“I don’t know, maybe three. That was when I went to the orphanage, so it had to have been shortly before then. Did you know my mom?” Aedan said as he looked with a sense of confusion almost. If her aunt owned this her mom could have been someone they knew. He knew little of who Alice Cox was, he didn’t even know his mom’s maiden name. When she married his father everything seemed to have gotten lost and buried. Aedan’s past was quite honestly an enigma to even him at times. How could his mother have known Evie’s Aunt? It didn’t make any sense to him.
Evie took a steadying breath. This moment was critical for so many reasons. One day she would tell Aedan how her heart raced to hear his story. She would share with him how she wanted to blurt out everything but knew if the facts were wrong the consequences would be severe. She had to be sure not only for Aedan’s sake but for her own. Part of Evie wanted to end the conversation now and pretend this didn’t happen. If what she believed was true then her family would never forgive themselves. She had never thought to ask Aedan about his family. She didn’t even know his mother’s name. She had to find out more before she mentioned her suspicions. “I am not sure. What do you know about your mother,” she asked him gently.
“All I know about my mother, Elizabeth Teller, and my father, Alan Teller… is behind mystery and history. She visited that little village and home a few times, it was important I knew and I am told they loved each other… and me… very much. I wouldn’t know, they were murdered when I was three and I was left in an ally drenched in their blood crying.”

Evie sunk back on the couch staring at Aedan as if he were a ghost. Why did she not see it? The way his mouth curled up into a half grin when he smiled. Not the public toothy grin but the off-guard smirk he shared at times with Jessica and at times her. That was Elizabeth’s. The shape of his nose matched that of the McGarrett’s but there was only so many shapes of noses. There would be more parts of her in him the closer Evie looked. Still, she needed to be absolutely sure before they told anyone. Clearing her throat, Evie took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She had no idea how Aedan would react. Evie tried to wipe all expectations from her mind as she said simply, “I had a sister named Elizabeth.” Evie let the words hang long enough to catch a breath before starting again. “She and I spent summers at Alice Cox’s place. Many summers until she ran away with a man named Alan.” Evie did not say anymore but walked to her desk. Pulling out an image she had in a drawer she handed it to Aedan. It was the same farmhouse but when it was someone’s home: Alice’s home. It was the same angle as the one Aedan owned except there were two girls in it. One was of Evie about fifteen. The other a girl clearly related to her but several years younger. She needed to gauge Aedan’s reaction before she continued and spoke about the next steps that needed to be done.
Evie McGarrett.
Aedan looked at the photo, his eyes wide as he took it all in. This couldn’t be true, after all he learned today this made the least sense. “I…” he looked as if he saw a ghost and looked up at Evie. “This can’t be.” he said softly, he lost almost all bravado as he stood there as if he just went 10 rounds with Kahless in the arena. He wasn’t sure how to process this all.
“She looks just like me.” he said softly as he kept his eyes directly on the photo. His statement spoke volumes as he said nothing else, but felt a tug in his stomach as if he was going to throw up, misty eyes all but betraying him as he took a deep breath in.

“Yes, she does. You have her nose and the way you get that half mischievous smirk,” she said feeling a rush of relief and happiness. “THere is also the way you wave your hands,” Evie tried to imitate the sweeping gesture Aedan sometimes did when telling stories. So much was never known until this moment. Now both of them could fill in some pieces. It was then that Evie saw Teller ready to break. It snapped her out of her euphoria. The mother part of her wanted to hold him. Holding him was part of holding her sister but it was too soon for that. “I can tell you what I know,” she said softly feeling a growing knot fill her own stomach. This was exactly what she had wanted to avoid but could not find a way around it. Sometimes life threw coincidences at you. At times you could believe with all your heart and soul they were facts only to find out it was all smoke and mirrors. Evie wanted to begin to share everything wonderful and perfect about her sister but if it turned out the Elizabeth was not his mother, it could shatter Aedan. The man might profess he wanted or needed no one. He could scream to the heavens that his past was not important but it was. Everyone needed to know that they belonged somewhere and to someone.
Aedan however, was not some fragile person. He might look like he was sinking into the idea that his mother was Evie’s sister but the part that protected him was probably already putting up walls. “Aedan,” Evie said softly. “I will spend every day of the rest of my life telling you each memory I have of my sister. I will tell you how she thought, what she dreamed, and why she left us but I think we need some real proof that Elizabeth Teller and Elizabeth Wylam are the same person. I just,” Evie stood up and went with her gut. Touching Aedan’s arm she continued. “Nothing I am about to say is going to affect Evie and Aedan okay. I would be proud to call you my nephew. I am proud to call you my friend,” Evie wanted the man next to her to hear that word in its present tense. “I would love to get to know you but Elizabeth leaving was hard for us. I think I need to know one way or another. I am not ever going to push you but if I could have just a part of Elizabeth back,” Evie felt the first signs of tears clouding her vision. “Even the smallest part I would be forever grateful.” Evie did not say anything more. Aedan had probably already came up with the same idea. She would wait to see how he responded before continuing.

“I don’t… I need a moment.” Aedan said as he took in a deep breath. He knew a simple way to check, the outpost had his and her DNA on file. Quick cross check in sickbay they could know but he didn’t know if he wanted to go that route. Starfleet wasn’t a group he trusted.
“You and me both,” Evie said in a half laugh. While Aedan’s world had to be spinning so was Evie’s on some level. She and her sister had been close. Elizabeth’s departure from the family rocked the Wylams and haunted them. Now at least maybe if there were no answers there would still be a future. “Take all the time you need. I am not going back out there,” she sunk into the couch.
“I got, my ship. Doctor Ellis Ruger is on my staff… do you want to visit him?” Aedan said, if this was true he wasn’t going to delay. The easiest way was to follow the DNA and find out that way.

“Okay…when,” Evie said and then looked at Aedan with a half grin. “How did I know you traveled with a personal physician,” she started laughing. “You know if I am your Auntie Evie I will expect full medical benefits at the family discount which is free by the way. Sickbay is great but they need appointments and want to give stupid advice like take it easy. I’ll take it easy when I am dead,” she laughed.

“Now… I see no reason for us to wait.” Aedan said to her, he wanted to get this over. Learn the truth or not, but he didn’t want it handing over him.

===================
The Sabre’s sickbay.....Evie rolled down her sleeve looking at the young couple across the room. She was not upset that Aedan involved Jessica but part of her wished she and Aedan were alone. There was so much to talk about. She only had to wait another four minutes to see if Aedan and her were a genetic match.
“Hey you okay,” Jessica said sitting on Aedan’s knee. Gently she brushed the hair back from his brow with her fingertips. If the news had her in a state of shock Jessica could not even imagine how Aedan had to be feeling. She knew even before their conversation tonight Aedan’s desire for a family, however, Jessica doubted that the McGarrett’s were the first family on his adopt me wish list.

“I’m fine.” he said as he took a deep breath, pulling her close he gave her a soft kiss and let the doctor help.
“Now I just need to get a quick sample of Evie, we have Aedan on file, should take us less than a minute.” he said, giving Evie a hypo once she was ready as he took the sample to the machine to run the match.

“Aedan, you know if this test comes out positive this means you will be cousins with Mathias right. That also means you need to go take a trip with him. Create some family memories. I’d suggest canoeing. Nothing says family fun like being trapped on a river for four hours with your cousin,” she gave him a half wink. Jessica tried to hide her discomfort with the situation under a thin veil of humor. It was not that she didn’t want Aedan to he related tot he McGarrett clan. It was more that she didn’t want the test to be negative. This was the one thing that Aedan could never buy: family. Yes, she and he were creating their own but that was still not the same. A family gave someone a sense of belonging like nothing else in the universe. A family, even dysfunctional ones, gave you unconditional acceptance. A family gave you a place to run to when you were lost or alone. Aedan Teller had spent too long being lost and alone.
“Do you want to loose Mathias? Cause that’s how you loose him…” Aedan said, his eyes seeming to sparkle just a bit but he let no other sign show he was kidding at all grace his lips. Aedan himself wasn’t even certain how much of it was a joke or not.
“Stop joking,” Jessica said with a half laugh before casting a half worried glance at Evie. It didn’t matter what the results said from the test. Mathias and Aedan were going to work on being more than the ten minutes cordial to each other they had to survive now. Looking at her fiancé Jessica bit her lip. “You are joking right?”

Without thinking, Jessica rubbed her tummy in slow circles. The baby was moving everywhere most probably due to her nerves about the entire situation and the few doses of coffee from the party. “I know Bump. Daddy is just a little nervous but no matter what he has us forever and always. The Teller Musketeers,” she said softly. It was not odd that she talked to the baby. Maybe it was but this was her first baby. The topic, however, was meant to soothe her and Aedan’s nerves as they waited for the results from the test. The wording was sole to remind Aedan in a roundabout way that she would stand by him come what may for the rest of her life.
