“You know what I think,” Jessica said with her head still on his chest letting it rise and fall with his breathing. She knew Aedan thought he was going to get a pep talk about him being never being anything and his perspective was a bit skewed. Instead, she took a different route. The pep talk would come at another time.

Aedan found himself gently stroking her hair as he kissed the top of it, “What do you think pumpkin?”

“I think you are going to make a great dad.” Turning in his arms, she shifted positions so that her back was leaning on him and his hands rested on her tummy. “You are going to give our baby everything you never had. You are going to make sure that Bump and I are always loved, secure, and want for nothing,” she leaned her head to the side snuggling his arm a bit. “And I don’t mean money. Aedan the world sees you in one way. I am not sure why you think they need to but that is okay because I see you as the only man I want to spend the rest of my life with. Even if we had nothing we would have your strength and love. That is all I will ever need or ask of you. You don’t need to create a past any longer. You have a future with me and us,” she rubbed the back of his hands on her belly, “and we will write it the way we want. Screw everyone else,” she let out a half laugh. “You did get that part right. We don’t need them. We never have.”

“I know, it’s why I was so willing to throw in with you. I found the person I wanted and needed, few have come in my life genuinely caring. Adams did, she proved she respects me and I her, and a few others in my life. You my love, showed me I can let you in and expect nothing, yet get everything” he said as he gently caressed her belly, feeling his heart warm as he knew they would be having a small child.

Walking into the room Evie immediately saw the person she was looking for. He was facing the wrong direction with someone in his arms. Evie hoped it was Jessica. Having two girlfriends was always problematic but having two girlfriends where one was pregnant was a train wreck waiting to happen. “Aedan, I need a word with you please,” Evie said softly but firmly. Jessica and Aedan could snuggle all they wanted later. Evie needed him and all his attention at the moment.

Aedan paused as he looked over. Letting go of Jessica his eyes narrowed onto Evie. She was one he hadn’t decided on. She wanted his money yes, but she didn’t seem to want to abuse it. She genuinely just wanted a small shop and to help the people of the outpost, and maybe find a date for her son. Aedan couldn’t fault her for that

“Good evening Evie. Your place looks amazing,” Jessica said moving to Aedan’s side taking his hand. “I love this section of your bar. It has a....cozy feel,” she looked for an adjective to describe the distinctly man cave feel mixed with modernism.

“Jessica,” Evie smiled and let out the long breath she was holding. It was not that she doubted Aedan. It was not that she doubted Jessica. It was more that Evie doubted the rest of the universe. Jessica was beautiful, Aedan rich. The combination meant the couple would struggle like all young couples did. “Have you eaten? You should eat something,” Evie said in a motherly tone. “And maybe if you don’t mind I could speak to Aedan,” she asked the XO.

Jessica had no idea why Evie wanted to talk to Aedan but it was clearly very important and very private. “Yes please keep him busy so I can get a cup of coffee in peace.” Kissing Aedan on the cheek quickly, Jessica gave him no time to change her mind. Evie’s arrival was more than opportune. Jessica had something to do and it would be easier without Aedan tagging along. “Be nice to Evie. She is old and doesn’t have long to live,” she whispered to Aedan, winked, and gave him a slightly warning look before walking out of the room.

“You two surprise me,” Evie said watching Jessica leave. “Jessica needs someone who will take care of her and you need someone to remind you how normal people live,” she smiled. “Come with me,” Evie said to Aedan walking to the door. “I need to show you something.”

EVIE’S OFFICE

Entering the office, Evie sat down on the small couch in there rather than at the desk. She wanted this conversation to be personal because it was personal. “Aedan,” Evie said taking on her mom persona. “I was wondering if I could ask you a question?”

Aedan looked closely at her, wondering what this built up had been all about. “What questions?” he asked her. He wasn’t rude in his mannerisms, but he definitely gave a vibe like he didn’t want to be doing this now at this hour.

Evie looked at Aedan for a long moment taking in all his features. “May I ask what happened earlier between you and Jessica,” she asked gently. There was no easy way to bring up the conversation she wanted to have. All Evie hoped was that she could ease into it.
