Science Lab - Reception for Admiral Sabok - Investigation
Toveka and her Ensign shadow arrived in the science lab and she had him place the crate on one of the unoccupied stations. Dismissing him so that less ‘fingers’ would be in the mix, she put on a pair of gloves and began removing the items and setting them on the table. Once everything was set out, and recorded, she picked up the tricorder and began scanning.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : The first thing she did was scan for anything overtly poisonous. It was a long shot, but worth a try. The second thing she set the scanner for were any items not on the list of food and drink she had notified the scanner was part of the residue allowed on the items scanned. Not wanting to get too far ahead of herself, she did the passes necessary then waited to see what the computer spit out in response.

: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Lt JG Toveka Brine
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Scientist
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : No common poisons registered on the initial scan. The scans of the foods and drinks she scanned with the tricorder were all normal…with one exception. The plomeek soup contained a significant amount of alkaloids, alkaloids from a vararillium flower.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : The Tricorder
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : T’Pen had heard that there was an investigation ongoing about something. She thought her experience as a police surgeon could help.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : She then stood outside the lab clearly waiting for the CO and the Science JO to look at her.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Ens. T’Pen, Doctor.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : OOC: Just to clarify the CO is actually still in the lounge in this side sim. Thanks for jumping in! ~Adam
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : One of the NE’s coughed to get Toveka’s attention, then nodded towards the door. Turning to see who he was referring to, Toveka nodded. “Welcome, Dr. Please, come in. You are always welcome here.” Once that was given, she reached to tap her comm badge. Stopping just before she touched it, she frowned in thought. Glancing back to the NE she motioned him over. “I want you to find the CO. Go to the lounge. Tell him I need to see him and the Gunny here as soon as possible. Don’t tell anyone else, don’t pass the message on, tell the Gunny or the CO yourself. Whichever you find first.”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : She sent the runner off and turned back to the Doctor. “What can you tell me about the vararillium flower?” She wasn’t overly familiar with it. And while she couldn’t say why, without the CO or Gunny giving her clearance, she could at least find out what she could and use that information in the context she needed to.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Lt JG Toveka Brine
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Science
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “I’ll look it up for you stat. I do know it’s rather rare.”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : T’Pen would then look up the vararillium flower on her medical holopad. She’d search specifically for its biochemical properties.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : OOC: Gamemaster info please
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Ensign T’Pen, Doctor.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : The holopad displayed an image of the vararillium flower, which had dark purple pedals that had red spots on the inside and light pink stigmas. It also displayed the following information.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Vararillium
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Native to Chula on Romulus
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Uncommon
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Vararillium is a non-edible flower. It has no known value medicinally. At one point in their history, Romulans living in the Chula region used the alkaloids from the vararillium flower to make poison darts used in tribal warfare, though this practice was discontinued several hundred years ago.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Holopad
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “Varalillium flower. Rare as I suggested. Non-edible. Native of the Chula region on Romulus. Its alkaloids were distilled by the Romulans to make poisoned darts, though this was discontinued a few centuries ago.”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Ens. T’Pen, Doctor.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Toveka frowned. “Seems someone has knowledge of Romulan historical warfare. The question is…Romulan or someone wanting them blamed?”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : She made another sweep of all the items. This time she recalibrated thesensors to seek out the flower and its trace alkaloids.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Lt JG Toveka Brine
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Science
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “Wrong conclusion, ma’am. The Romulans discontinued this project centuries ago. Why would anyone use a three-hundred year old poison to pin blame on a species who, more likely than not, would have the capacity to deflect such blame? It is their poison. They know it better than anyone else. Why would they not use one of their current poisons? Or better still, an unknown poison?”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : T’Pen would pause quickly before asking another question.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “How was this poison delivered? I’d need to know as, given I’m a former police surgeon, I’d be able to help you. I used to investigate this during my time in the Academy Police Volunteers.”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Ensign T’Pen, Ace Detective.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Alkoloids from the flower were present in the plomeek soup still. None of the other items showed any sign of it.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Tricorder
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : bump
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Raf
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Toveka frowned a moment. “It seems to only be in the plomeek soup.” She frowned because earlier in the evening, when it had come out hot and fresh, she had taken a bit of it, herself. Albeit, she had barely three spoonfuls before deciding she wanted nothing more to do with it. “It’s curious… I had a bit of the soup, myself. And I am sure he was not the only one to partake of it. Curious that no one else ended up sick.” She turned to the Doctor. “Did they?”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : If anyone else was sick, perhaps the target wasn’t the Admiral. But if he was the only one, perhaps his server, dishes and cohorts were to be more closely scrutinized. A thought occurred to her. Turning back to the Doctor, she asked, “I had a couple spoonfuls, of the soup I mean. I don’t feel sick. But is there a chance I would have ingested some and ‘not’ gotten as sick as the Admiral?” She was not familiar enough to know if the dose had to be minute or massive in order to cause symptoms.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Lt JG Toveka Brine
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Scientist
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : ((OOC… added last bit when I realized ‘assuming’ I wasn’t sick was autoing… lol))
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “It was only the Admiral, ma’am. At least that’s the only person I saw in sickbay who was present at the dinner. Have you considered examining the delivery mechanism? The bowl or whatever? Could it be that the Admiral might be more susceptible to the poison? Could it be that it was inserted after you tasted the soup? Could it be that the poison can differ in potency levels as time goes by? We should develop a timeline of events to allow us to better answer these queries.”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : A quick pause would occur to allow T’Pen to gather her thoughts. After a few seconds, her eyes shoot open as if having a eureka moment.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “If I can make a deduction here, the reason this three-centuries-old poison was used may have been to prevent us from asking these questions or to stall us answering them. Our knowledge of the poison is rudimentary at best as indicated by the lack of descriptive detail found int he file. I also sincerely do not believe the Romulans will suddenly release their data files to the Federation on the matter. We will likely have to do our own research in the matter if necessary, which might take a long time.”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Ensign T’Pen, Doctor.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : At first gradually, and then coming on stronger, light-headedness and a twinging upset stomach feeling came over Toveka. It wasn’t to the point of debilitating her, but it seemed to be hitting her harder than a typical illness and it certainly came upon her very suddenly.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Sort of GM
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Toveka s listening to the Doc when the first but if nausea rolled her stomach. She continued to listen but moved to the replicator. Getting a glass of water, she took a sip as the woman had her ‘aha’ moment.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : The normally stoic Half Romulan suddenly didn’t feel so stable. She grit her teeth as another wave hit her and left her hand clutching the edge of the nearest table. “I think, perhaps, we should see about them releasing the information, regardless.” Hey voice cracking as she closed her eyes a moment to gather thoughts in a suddenly foggy mind as the room spun for a moment. Opening her eyes she raised her chin as if trying to physically defy the symptoms coming over her. “I suddenly don’t feel well. But surely it can’t be the soup, can it? I mean…” her mind raced a she tried to come up with another plausible explanation. “Surely it would have occurred sooner than this. Right?”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : As she glanced at the doctor, the woman would catch a glimpse of something no one else on the ship had seen…a moment of fear in the scientist eyes. It was swiftly replaced by determination and a bit of rage as if the scientist, herself, could simply use logic and reasoning to make herself feel better. Though by this point, both hands were gripping the table to keep her steady.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Lt JG Toveka Brine
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Scientist
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “Are you alright ma’am? You seem nauseous. Perhaps…the soup is having its effect on you.”
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : T’Pen would whip out her tricorder and begin analyzing the LTJG’s health.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : OOC: Gamemaster info please.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Ens. T’Pen, Doctor.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : The tricorder revealed an elevated body temperature as well as a high white blood cell.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : Also, in her blood stream there were alkaloids which were increasing in number, and as was the case with the alkaloids in the admiral’s soup, they were from a vararillium flower.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : Toveka’s rapid decline in how she was physically feeling leveled off a bit. But her symptoms continued to make her feel like she was seriously ill.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : Sort of GM
: : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : Toveka shook off the woman. “I’m fine. We need to figure this out.” Her voice, while sounding determined and steady in her head, was slightly slurred and her skin paled even more.
: : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : “Ma’am, the poison we’ve been investigating is having its effects on you. Let’s get you to sickbay!”
: : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : T’Pen would then let her voice heard on the medical tannoy system in sickbay.
: : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : “Medical, we need a stretcher, a nurse and a poison antidote kit. We have a poisoning in the science department.”
: : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : She then turned to Toveka and held her.
: : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : “You’ll be fine. Medical will be here in a small while.”
: : : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : : Ensign T’Pen, First Responder.
: : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : At this point, the half Romulan went to her knees. A slight curse, definitely not an Earthen dialect, fell from her lips in a half growl. “I… I need to find an antitode… antidote…” she stammered in correction. “Need to … secure evidence…”
: : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : She closed her eyes as another wave of heat seemed to wash over her. “Need to tell.. Gunny…” She tapped her badge, determined not to abandon her post. The evidence ‘had’ to be preserved. =^= Brine to Sergeant Hunter…=^= Her voice ragged like she had been running. =^= Need to secure evidence in science. Assistance… needed…Sir…=^=
: : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : Whatever was happening to her was defying her mind’s desire to make it ‘not’ happen. She couldn’t seem to get to her feet, though she refused to fall over completely.
: : : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : : Lt JG Toveka Brine
: : : : : : : : : : : : Science
: : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : =^= Understood, on my way =^= came Gunny’s reply.
: : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : It was not even 30 seconds later that the broad shoulder squat Marine entered into the Science Lab. His mismatched eyes scanning the room, not specifically for threats, that came as natural as breathing but for the evidence in question.
: : : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : : Master Gunnery Sargent Ransom, SOO
: : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : He’d notice some food and drink items from the Admiral’s reception sitting on a table. Toveka and T’Pen were there when he entered the room, but a mere couple seconds later a familiar blue shimmer surrounded Lieutenant Brine and cause the ill scientist to vanish.
: : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : The captain’s voice then came over Gunny’s combadge. =^= McGarrett to Gunny. Change of plans. I’m going to swing by the Infirmary. Dr. Stone reports there is a second victim. =^=
: : : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO
: : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : As the others would be handling LTJG Brine’s case, T’Pen would be busy looking up the dynamics of alkaloid poisons, particularly how they’re manufactured and how they’re inserted into liquids.
: : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : OOC: Gamemaster info please.
: : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : Ensign T’Pen, Medical Researcher.
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : First she would find some general information on alkaloids:
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : “Alkaloids are a group of naturally occurring nitrogen-based chemical compounds. They are produced by a wide variety of organisms including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals. They have been used for many different medicinal purposes and in some cases as recreational drugs. Alkaloids can also be toxic. Plant-based alkaloids have been used since ancient times to poison arrows.”
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : Also the following on plant-based alkaloid poisoning:
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : “Alkaloids, particularly plant-based alkaloids, have been used by various cultures as poisons due to their toxicity. Usually an alkaloid is selected that is capable of causing acute poisoning that results in severe illness or death of the intended victim after a short period of exposure. Also, alkaloid poisons that the body’s blood stream aborbs are more likely to be used. Alkaloid poisons can either be applied to weaponry or mixed into a food or drink for the intended victim to consume.”

: : : : : OOC: Tyra wrote a response based on what was written in the Sickbay thread, which didn’t include sending medical to the science lab. Let’s just go with Toveka getting beamed away. ~Adam
: : : :
: : : : =^=Understood Captain, the second Victim is Ensign Brine=^= Gunny stated flatly, it was one thing when a dignitary had been killed on his watch, that was a professional insult, now this was a member of his crew, that made it a bit more personal.
: : :
: : : The captain’s reply was short and to the point. =^= Understood. McGarrett out. =^=
: : : :
: : : : Gunny moved over and looked over the evidence. With a quick glance he found the appropriate black latex like gloves and slide a pair over his hands with a snap. Then began boxing the evidence back into its containers. Then to be safe he boxed the gloves as well in case they had removed any trace evidence from the original pieces. What he needed was a forensics team. There would need to be one sent to both the Blue Step, and the Galley for scans. This was getting bigger than he had expected.
