Outpost 42
COO's Office, Pre-sim
Tabris had gotten himself moved in, and after sweating countless bullets as the moving team positioned the artifacts he had brought, he thought the best idea would be to go talk to the boss. He donned an era appropriate uniform, gave his kitten some snuggles and warned his ficus not to get into any trouble before venturing out onto the station itself. He perused the promenade, and among the few abandoned shop fronts he made a note of which places looked the best for lunch as well as a couple places offering distraction from the potentially boring post.

: : : : : : : : : : : After taking his sweet time, Tabris approached the COO’s office and let his finger sit just above the button for a moment or two, never enjoying these sort of formal meetings. With a quick breath, Tabris pushed it and awaited the response.

: : : : : : : : : : From one of the consoles in the rear of Operations Gunny looked up at the newcomer. There was something familiar in feeling about the new arrival. If it was the new operations officer then it was Lieutenant Asam. Gunny nodded at the man then turned back to his work. There was always work to be done.

: : : : : : : : : The COO was hardly a formal woman. Her hair was beginning to fall from the regulation style it had been held in. Her hands were showing clearly the work she had placed into the operations of the outpost. While seemingly blind, at least by the standards of human comprehension, she still sat behind a desk, trying to catch up on that ratched PaDDwork. Upon hearing the sound of the chime, she emitted an almost grateful sigh of relief for a small break.. If this happened to be good.

: : : : : : : : : While her antennae moved involuntarily, in response to her own curiosity and change in direction, she turned her head towards the door. While unable to truly see what was there, she could put enough into context to figure out what was going on. “Come in!” Came the somewhat ragged, hardly feminine voice of the Aenar woman.

: : : : : : : : Tabris walked in jauntily into the office and provided a hand in which to shake. “Hello hello!” the El-Aurian said happily, “I am Tabris Asam, you’re new engineering officer. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Tabris took the opportunity to sit down and glance over the PaDD’s that were on the COO’s desk saying, “Re-calibrating the fusion reactors or am I reading that wrong?” Tabris asked, awaiting his boss’s response.

: : : : : : :
: : : : : : : Epello would be lying, if she were to say that she wasn’t surprised by the convivial voice of the Operations Officer. She didn’t allow herself to use her telepathy on others, unless she had their concent. Thus, his nature brought a genuine smile to her face. Shaking his hand stiffly, “Hello, Mr. Asam. Welcome to the Outpost.” Her antennae moved involuntarily, as she ‘watched’ him sit down. Quirking a pigmentless brow, Aryris responded, “You are not reading it wrong at all, Lieutenant. Tedious, albeit effective work, wouldn’t you say?”
: : : : : : :
: : : : : : : She paused for a second, awaiting his response, prior to continuing. “Where were you assigned prior to the Outpost? A starship, I would assume?”

: : : : :
: : : : : Tabris smiled as he had correctly assessed the work and responded, “Tedious to say the least, but I’ve found that if my reactor calibration isn’t done at least on a weekly basis if not sooner the nuclear drift of the deuterium into tritium causes a fairly noticeable decrease in efficiency, and nobody wants to scrub the filters after letting the drift go on for say.... a month? I learned that lesson the hard way.” Tabris said with a slight chuckle as he refocused and said, “I was posted to the USS Holstead for the last few years but upon my promotion command decided I needed to be placed somewhere that doesn’t have a warp core to ‘accidentally’ run a couple hundred degrees hot for a week and a half while the Chief Engineer was out on medical leave and confined to quarters…”

: : : (Thank you!)
: :
: : Epello was impressed, to say the least. “Agreed! Anything more than a week, and things start to go awry, well.. at least in our eyes, they do. Quite frankly, we cannot afford any decrease in efficiency. Not on a starship or and outpost, it simply isn’t acceptable.” A look of disgust quickly drifted through her features, before disappearing. “As an Ensign, that was a job I knew well. The hard way, eh? You must have been tasked with cleaning the filters before, then?”
: :
: : “Accidentally run a couple hundred degrees hot? That is surely an incident to remember,” Aryris remarked, finding that she would have been concerned heavily about such a situation, should she had been on that ship during that time. “Was the USS Holstead, in your opinion, the vessel that gab you the most experience when it comes to the Operations department?” The Aenar woman leaned forwards, clasping her pale, pigmentless hands upon the desk before her. A curious eyebrow quirked slightly above her left, sightlessly blue eye. She seemed inquisitive to know the man she was working with.

: Tabris chuckled lightly and said, “Yes, the first thing Lieutenant Pavel put me on when I was assigned to the Holstead was maintaining the filters, amongst other seemingly mundane and trivial things. She really believed in teaching the importance of starting from the bottom up when training her officers and making them understand how every little thing is important.” As he spoke, Tabris assumed an almost relaxed posture in the chair before continuing, “Well regrading the warp core, I certainly had the most stern talking to since leaving my bike out in the yard back on Earth when I was 12 from my mother, but suffice it to say I learned that the cores these days are far less tolerant of a 300C temperature variance then the freighters I worked on back in the 2200’s.”
:
“2200s, Lieutenant?” The Aenar’s voice had the ghost of curiosity pinching just above her simple query. She did not allow her telepathy to supersede any mundane tasks beyond that of giving her a sense of vision, or general direction. Which, even then, was directed mostly through the white appendages, which curved minutely forwards, from the top of her head. “I have not had much time to read your file. I should hope this does not sound rude, by any means, but how old are you?”
: He sat up a little and adjusted his glasses as he thought. “Regrading modern Operations yes, the Holstead and specifically Lt. Pavel, taught me everything. While I had been a mechanic on a few freighters between 2210 and 2285, the systems these days are lightyears ahead, to the point that I basically had to relearn everything from the ground up.” Tabris said, happily remembering the days he would galavant around the quadrant with his old crew. A tinge of sadness crossed his face as he realized that all of them were dead, and while a few of them had kids he would periodically play catch with or go on shipwide games of tag, those kids too were also all probably dead or at least old enough to have forgotten the happy go lucky El-Aurian they grew up knowing.

Aryris could sense the sadness from within his features, but it came across rather mild to her blind nature. This gave her an iffy feeling, which she assumed to be a fact, and thus moved on from the subject. She did not wish one of her colleagues to be plagued by the uneasiness of a memory of incident that elicited such emotions. Seeing as she was regarding the past, the assumption of lost friends came to mind. “Your experience trumps mine. I may have to watch my back, just in case you come in for the kill.” She joked, her voice insinuating towards the idea that he might replace her, as the Chief of Operations.
“Considering your several years of service, I would assume you are familiar with the differences of engineering that come between startships and outposts? I also assume that you have been upon an outpost before, allowing you to achieve experience in the nature of power cores, outpost systems and whatnot?” She asked for clarification, rather than information. With the way he held himself and the intelligence that seemed to emanate from his words, she had no doubt he was a knowledgeable officer.
