After finishing up with her boarding paperwork, Sofia decided to get started with introducing herself to the layout of the Outpost and, in particular, the Merchant’s Wing, so that she could begin to build a bit of rapport with the civilian population. She knew merchants tended to have an immediate dislike of a security officer, but she hoped to perhaps convince them all she wasn’t looking for trouble and that her job was to keep everybody, civilian and starfleet safe.~Sofia Demakis~
“Look I don’t care how much it is going to cost,” a familiar voice floated out of one shop that Sofia could easily hear as she walked in the Merchants Wing of Outpost 42. “I want the Marvel Select Gambit not this thing,” Jessica held up a small action figure with a disgusted look on her face. “I mean it has these wierd sausages like yellow Homer Simpson hands and his coat.” Jessica wrinkled up her nose and moved from holding the figure to dangling it by the cape. “This…this is a hobo robe and not something a Mutant would wear. I am not paying for this one and I want the other one and I want it by Friday,” she stated hotly dropping the one on the counter.
“Miss Vaughn, we here at IFEA pride ourselves in making the customer happy but the item you are requesting is several hundred years old,” the Ferengi clerk pleaded.
“And I was paying several hundred dollars more than the cost for the convenience but if you can’t produce it I am sure I can find it elsewhere,” Jessica said turning away. It was then she saw the small boy about ten years old looking from her to the toy. As the Ferengi droned on Jessica made a decision.
“Fine I will add twenty percent to the cost but if it is not here by Friday then IFEA will be servicing one less customer.” Picking up the toy she walked over to the small boy and handed him the figure. “He really doesn’t have a hobo coat and I can’t just let him go back into that stock room. Ever see Toy Story: Starcommand Exploits Buzz and Woody take on the Dominion? I am sure they would defeat the evil Jem’Hasrboians with his help so give him a good home?” Standing up with the grace of a bloated beached whale Jessica spied Sophia.
“Chief,” she said exiting the store. “What are you doing besides the obvious,” Jessica asked giving the COS a warm smile.

“Just learning my way about the Outpost,” Sofia returned the smile, “Is everything alright in there?” She queried.

“Yes just typical shopping at IFEA,” Jessica said looking at her personal communicator and sending a message on it while she spoke. IFEA or Intergalactic Ferengi Exports and Acquisitions was a mainstay at any shopping complex in the galaxy. It undersold most of its competitors with its low-cost mass-produced items. “If you’d like I can show you around?” Jessica tried not to sound overly eager. Being self-confident in your job was one thing. Being self-confident in your life was another. In the big chair and as XO, Jessica had no issues making hard calls or separating personal feelings from what needed to be done. In civilian clothes, the decisions were not so easy. Life with Aedan was perfect. Life as Aedan’s girlfriend and future wife was far different. The rumors in the holo-tabloids claimed she was everything from Aedan’s mistress, to a gold digger, to the best thing that ever happened to him. For as many people that claimed the baby was his, there was an equal group claiming it was not. Sophia was relatively new to the Outpost. Maybe they would hit it off as friends. There was only one way to tell.

“I’d appreciate that,” Sofia nodded, “As Security Chief, I like to have a mental map of everything. Plus I like to make my presence known to shopkeepers, I’d like to develop a rapport with them. They might have information that might make my job easier, one never knows right?”

“So what is your poison? Shoes, shotguns, or shots? Well in my current condition it will be shots of decaf cafe au lait but all good things in life require a sacrifice. Thank god mine has an expiration date of nine months. So the Outpost has it all and the stores are open,” she said with a smirk. Jessica liked Sofia’s enthusiasm and wondered what she was like on the job.

“My poison is pretty much caffeine, if I could mainline it, I probably would,” Sofia joked only slightly, “Though being a security officer, I appreciate a good weapon.”
