Despite the awkward silence, Dira had a smile on her face and it was genuine too. “Well, I don’t know about you both, but I’m excited to get aboard the our new ship. Have you heard that much yet?” she asked with a gleam in her dark eyes.

Ria looked up in surprise, her head tilted slightly to the side. “We are?” she asked, a hint of confusion and uncertainty in her voice. “I thought the Ogawa was supposed to be repaired?” She looked from Dira to Achilleas and back to Dira. It wasn’t that she was surprised about not having been told before. After all, she was a mere junior officer. And what was more one who had only just graduated and been assigned to the ship. She expected to find out things last and that was perfectly fine. What she was surprised about was that there had been a change in plans and it made her wonder how badly the ship had been damaged and how narrow things had been. Those questions caused a certain amount of unease within her as it could happen again during their next or any other future mission. And while she wasn’t afraid of dying herself, not that she wanted to; on the contrary, the thought of other people dying terrified her. Especially people she cared about and loved.

Achilleas also had a surprised look on his face. “I knew there was some damage, ramming your way out of a dimensional rift will do that, but I hadn’t heard it was that bad. I’m guessing the new one we get will still be a medical ship, but the important question is how good will my science labs be?” Despite still holding Ria’s hand, he did not pick up on her unease.

Knowing that she needed to maneuver through this part of the discussion carefully, Dira gave a reassuring smile. “State of the art everything, but yes, a medical ship. A veritable warp capable hospital. Captain Taylor and I just found out, so we’ll be making a more formal announcement soon, but it’s not really a secret. Apparently the damage is repairable but not in a reasonable time frame and Command didn’t want the crew idle for that long. This new ship is a complete new class that is very nearly ready for us. But… lots to be excited about,” she said with a grin.

“Oh wow,” Ria breathed. That did sound exciting and the idea of top of the art science labs brought a smile to her face and wiped her worries from her mind. At least for the moment. “That sounds wonderful,” she whispered and looked over to Achilleas.

Achilleas grinned at the thought of having his own lab again. The ones on loan from the starbase were fantastic but they weren’t free to be personalized or customized. He looked over at Ria as she looked at him and winked. “We’ll have to see how good the stellar cartography lab is and how sensitive the sensors are.”

“We do!” Ria replied, her whole face lighting up even more. Turning towards Dira and becoming a little shier again, she asked, “When will the new ship arrive here?” She also wondered about crew quarters and if junior officers would share quarters as they did right now on the Starbase. But she didn’t dare to ask and while she’d love her own quarters to be able to get the quiet time she needed, she also knew that she could manage with sharing. She had throughout the Academy, so it wasn’t like she wasn’t sort of used to it any ways.
