Folding her arms on the table before her, Dira rested on them lightly, her mind thinking through the various permutations of faith and spirituality. She had described herself as spiritual on numerous occasions over the years, but its exact definition was hard to pin down. “I can’t speak for anyone else, but I know for myself that spirituality is about connectedness. Especially as a telepath, I can’t help but feel the connections between me and everyone else. They simply are more tangible. And when you have that, it’s easier to see the beauty in it. For me, feeling those connections is a form of faith. Something I rely on everyday. To not have that would be devastating. So I can understand how having your faith denied to you would be equally devastating all the while it could reinforce it,” she said, casting a smile at Ria.

Ria smiled softly back at Dira and said, “I feel like that as well. Obviously I’m not a telepath, but my faith makes me feel connected to my people and my home. And even out here, lightyears away from the wormhole and the celestial temple I feel the connection to the prophets in prayer and mediation. It’s my anchor and a source of strength for me.” Turning her head towards Achilleas and reaching for his hand, she continued, “And while I can’t imagine my life without my faith, I do understand that not everyone can believe and that’s fine. As long as we treat each other’s believes and approach to faith and spirituality with respect all is fine.”

Achilleas smiled as he took Ria’s hand. “I respect you and all of your thoughts and beliefs. I may not understand your faith but that doesn’t change my feelings for you, instead it’s another facet of you that I’m looking forward to learning about.”

CSO Petrakos

“Thank you, Achilleas,” Ria replied very softly, her voice only audible above the music if they listened closely. She gently squeezed his hand and looked him in the eyes for a brief moment before dropping her gaze. She was grateful that he felt like that and once again she wished she was better (or capable at all really) to put her thoughts and feelings into words so that she could really tell him that. Instead she ran the index finger of her other hand along the foot of her wine glass and waited for either Dira or Achilleas to say something.

Despite the awkward silence, Dira had a smile on her face and it was genuine too. “Well, I don’t know about you both, but I’m excited to get aboard the our new ship. Have you heard that much yet?” she asked with a gleam in her dark eyes.

Ria looked up in surprise, her head tilted slightly to the side. “We are?” she asked, a hint of confusion and uncertainty in her voice. “I thought the Ogawa was supposed to be repaired?” She looked from Dira to Achilleas and back to Dira. It wasn’t that she was surprised about not having been told before. After all, she was a mere junior officer. And what was more one who had only just graduated and been assigned to the ship. She expected to find out things last and that was perfectly fine. What she was surprised about was that there had been a change in plans and it made her wonder how badly the ship had been damaged and how narrow things had been. Those questions caused a certain amount of unease within her as it could happen again during their next or any other future mission. And while she wasn’t afraid of dying herself, not that she wanted to; on the contrary, the thought of other people dying terrified her. Especially people she cared about and loved.
