Facing his own physical vulnerability was something Ralin Tell tended to find rather distressing. A man with deep psychological trauma which he made no bones of his struggle or need for support with, he prided himself on maintaining his zenithal physical condition and athleticism. It was the basis of his career and the outlet that focussed his disparate sides. Nonetheless, he was a man who would spend his life, at least for the forseeable future, recovering from the physical trauma of his joining.

All of this weighed on Ralin’s mind as he approached the starbase’s sickbay, ever aware not only of his issues but of his own responses to them. Stepping into the medical area, the Trill stationed himself in the centre of the space, waiting for someone to gravitate to him as he found medics tended to.

It was Solal’s first day officially on duty aboard the Ogawa. The half Vulcan had convinced himself he wasn’t excited… merely looking forward to the opportunity to work. He’d just barely gotten to work when he noticed an Ensign stood near the medical bay’s door, who appeared to be waiting. Stopping by the Ensign, he said, “Were you needing something?”

~ Solal Segal, Doctor

Ralin waited stilly as the doctor approached, lightly tracking him with his eyes. “Yes doctor. A’m Ensign Tell reporting for duty for Ogawa, here for my tests and that.” Ralin’s put conscious effort into forming his language well while on duty but the intimidation of the infirmary was enough to rattle that aspect of his composure undone.

Solal nodded, and in a swift motion, gestured to a random biobed. “Have a seat. I can handle that for you.” He said, and he grabbed a tricorder to go along with his PaDD. On the PaDD, he pulled up the medical file of Ensign Tell. “First assignment?” He asked.

~ Solal, Doctor

The ensign effortlessly lifted himself to assume a seat on the bed. Typically not the most talkative of fellows, Ralin committed himself to engaging the doctor in small talk. Alunah Tell had frequently utilised the concept as a weapon against nervousness and Ralin had attempted to do the same in the few years since his joining. Despite his efforts, he had been met with a series of rather cold and uninterested physicians. For that to change with a Vulcan, Ralin thought, would be an amusing irony. Even before he had responded to the doctor’s first question, it seemed, the distraction had begun functioning as intended. “It might as well be”, he sighed,”the Anteres shipyards. A year. A full year watching ships not move.” The Trill looked the Vulcan in the eyes. “How long have you been on the Ogawa?” After inspecting their surroundings, he corrected himself. “How long were you on the Ogawa?”

Solal suppressed a grin. “Sounds… interesting.” He said, in his best ‘Vulcan’ tone. “I have not yet been on the Ogawa. I have been with her crew for little enough time that I arrived to the star base, much like yourself.” He said. Solal was not the best at small talk either. Even when he allowed his human side to show, he tended to be quiet. Where he was expending all his energy trying to control his emotions, he good as well be a statue. He didn’t even really know what to say when he was trying to have small talk with someone.

“A see”, Ralin responded simply as he turned away to face the wall directly ahead of him.

“Is there anything that needs to be added to your file?”

~ Solal, Doctor

“Well…”, Ralin rolled his head, “the transport I came on. It stopped off plan to get some survivors of a shuttle crash. Landed on an unknown moon with plenty of plants here and there and that. Might be worth checking there’s no an alien flower eating ma brain?” His delivery was extremely deadpan with a gentle tilt of the head bringing his eyes back to meet Solal’s. It was in moments such as that, when a confluence of factors would allow a keen observer to see through his gruff exterior, that his eyes spoke with the lived experience of several lifetimes. Jokes were rarely spouted by the man but when one arose something indescribable gave the sense that he had decades, perhaps centuries prior lost the inhibition and fear of it landing flat. Tell was a man who knew exactly where it was worth concentrating his anxieties.

Solal nodded, meeting Ralin’s eyes with his own. “Of course. The odds that you picked anything up are not high, but caution is usually the way to go.” He said flatly. He was in full Vulcan mode that day, and he did not seem affected by the look Ralin gave. The look of… age. Experience. But Solal’s own gaze was flat, emotionless, and unchanging. “If anything is abnormal, my tricorder will find it.” He said, lifting the tricorder and removing the little scanner node. Once he had, he scanned Ralin, moving the node near the other man’s body from his head to his toes, watching the screen closely.

~ Solal, Doctor

Ralin wriggled slightly as he sat for his scan. Sedentariness did not become the athletic man. “So?”

Immediately the scan revealed two distinct brain wave patterns associated with a pair of cerebral nuclei. Familiarity with Trill physiology would reveal that this was a standard trait of a joined Trill but also that the man’s nervous system more broadly was overly disjointed. The Tell symbiote sat in the lower half of his torso, a complex web of nerves connecting it to its host. Among this network of nerves some connections seemed overly serviced, with nerve tissue almost seeming to have doubled up on itself, while other connections a joined Trill would usually possess seemed absent. Additionally, there was evidence of past organ failure in both the heart and liver along with signs of treatment to stimulate their recoveries.

Older wounds were also revealed, seemingly chronicling a long history of injuries receiving poor treatment. Phasor wounds to the back, chest and right leg were indicated, along with fractures of the collarbone and left arm, all seemingly having been treated with medicine at least a century or two behind Starfleet standards.

All these detections were of static conditions. The only indications of anything exceptional in the man’s health on this particular day were elevated blood pressure and cortisol levels.
