Getting to her feet, she slipped her shoes back on and then picked up the basket. With a hint of regret in her voice, she said, “Computer, end program.” And a second later their surroundings disappeared and they were standing in the black and yellow room that was the holodeck. While making her way towards the doors and then back into the corridor beyond, she pondered how to proceed from here.

Achilleas gently took the basket from Ria and indicated his wish to follow her back to her quarters. He wanted to make sure she got there safely afterall. He held out his free hand for her to take.

For a moment that lasted not much longer than a heartbeat, Ria hesitated. But then she reached for his hand and started to lead the way towards her quarters. She was still feeling cold, but at least she was dry again now that they had left the holodeck. That was certainly the bright side about falling into a holographic river. Not knowing what to say, and never having been one to mind silence, Ria walked down the corridors without saying a word.

It wasn’t long till the two of them arrived at their destination. Coming to a halt just outside the range of the door sensor, Ria turned around and looked Achilleas straight in the eyes. At least for a short moment before she partly dropped her gaze again. “Thank you, Achilleas, for everything,” she said softly, her cheeks already pink, but turning even pinker as she realised that she’d just called him by his first name for the very first time.

Achilleas smiled sweetly at Ria. He was very tempted by her expression to kiss her right there in the corridor, but thought better of it. They had neither checked with the Captain yet and stuff like public affection was a bit too advanced for his inexperienced self. “You are more than welcome. This was just simply a fantastic time together. To see a glimpse into where you had lived before and try food from your culture was a fantastic experience. Your slip in the river shocked me greatly but everything after that was fantastic. Ugh, I’m rambling and saying fantastic too much now.”

“That’s okay,” Ria replied softly and gave his hand a gentle squeez. “And I’m sorry I startled you.”

He looked away for a moment and took a deep breath before he looked back, “Thank you Riana for being a fantastic hostess and sharing a part of yourself with me. I wish you a good night or afternoon, whatever ship time is right now. Do get yourself warmed up though please. Your lips are still a bit blue.”

“I will,” Riani said with a nod and a shy smile. “Have a good rest of your day as well.” She let go of his hand and turned around, taking the last few steps towards the door to her quarters and then inside. She only briefly looked over her shoulder and smiled tenderly at Achilleas once more before the door shut between them. She had completely forgotten that he was still carrying the basket. She quickly got into the shower and stood there for a long time, much longer than was necessary for her to warm up again, and thought about everything that had happened that day.

Achilleas turned to leave but then realized he was still carrying the picnic basket. He was at a loss of what to do. Should he knock or hit the chime? In the end he decided to just hold onto it until their next shift overlapped then he could return it to her. With a little head shake at his being so easily distracted during this outing, he headed back to his own quarters with a grin glued to his face.
