Achilleas chuckled, “I’m not worried about getting wet at all. If this river led to a lake nearby I’d just jump in and go swimming. Now you are for more soaked than I. I can’t really help you dry your clothes but I can help you with this…” With that said he proceeded to grasp one of her braids and wring the water from it. He was very careful to not really tug on her hair in a hurtful manner but she would probably still feel it being tugged on. After he finished with the one he started on the other, all while she was still in his arms.

All the while Ria just stood there, to perplex to say or do anything other then blinking in reaction to Achilleas wringing out her hair. She could feel the slight pull, but it wasn’t nearly enough that it would be painful. Once she found her voice again, she whispered, “Thank you.” And without making the conscious decision to do so, she found herself turning her head and then resting her cheek against his chest.

Achilleas slowly wrapped his arms back around Ria after he felt her cheek press against his chest. A warm feeling spread throughout him despite the fact they were standing in a cold river. If Ria listened closely enough she would likely hear his heart beating at a slightly elevated rhythm. He steadied his breathing and just enjoyed the moment.

She could indeed hear his heart beat a little faster and Ria felt her own heart match his in pace. She liked it, but it also confused her and made her nervous. As a result her face turned scarlet once again and question after question raced through her head. It made her feel slightly dizzy and weak-kneed. Thus it was probably good that she was holding onto Achilleas. Then again, she most likely wouldn’t feel like this, if they weren’t holding each other in their arms.

Achilleas was startled out of his reverie when he noticed Ria begin to shiver. He wasn’t sure if it was do to the cold river, the shock of falling, or being deeply embraced in his arms. Without giving her much warning, he crouched a little then relocated the arms around his waist to be around his neck, then he scooped her up into his arms while he held her legs and back. He slowly waded his way back out of the river with her still in his arms. It was a good thing she wasn’t all that heavy and the river wasn’t moving very quickly, since he wasn’t a security beefcake or anything but a humble scientist. He called out for the computer to put a blanket near the river bank along with a couple of towels, then gently placed her down onto the blanket.

Achilleas wasn’t the only one who was startled. At first Ria wasn’t quite grasping what he was doing, but the moment he lifted her up in his arms her whole body stiffened and she literally stopped breathing, while staring rather wide-eyed at him. Yet she didn’t try to stop him.

“We’ve got to get you warmed up you’re shivering.” He finally added when reaching for a towel.

Ria tried to nod, but but barely managed to move her head. She just sat there. By now breathing again but so shallowly that her chest was barely moving at all. If her thoughts and emotions had been all over the place before: it was now ten times worse and she she no idea anymore how she was feeling.

Achilleas took Ria’s lack of movement for shock. He began to panic on what to do but came across an idea. Perhaps it wasn’t a smart or well thought out idea, but the close proximity of carrying her and the sweet and warm feeling that coursed through his body caused him to go for it. He gently cupped the back of her head and leaned forward to press his lips against hers.

At first she didn’t move or seem to react at all, unless you counted that she seemed to have topped breathing again and that her lips were trembling. But it wasn’t long till Ria found herself kissing Achilleas ever so slightly back. It felt nice and for a moment she almost managed to let go and relax. Yet suddenly her fears and worries took over again and she broke the kiss, quickly turning her face away while staying otherwise put. She didn’t want to hurt his feelings, yet she was scared and didn’t know what to do. So she just sat there struggling to get a handle on her emotions again and fighting back tears. All the while not entirely sure why she felt tears welling up in her eyes.

“Oh gosh, I’m so so sorry. I don’t know what came over me. You were looking just so beautiful and kissable. I feel I may have let my feelings get the better of me. I’m just… so… sorry…” Achileas responded, each of his words became more quiet than the last before he sounded as if he was whispering.

Shaking her head and looking at Achilleas again, Ria felt like she had a large lump in her throat that ade it impossible for her to say anything. After swallowing a couple of times she manged to say in a barley audible whisper, “Don’t apologise. You did nothing wrong. I just-” Her voice broke and she fell silent, not knowing how to finish that sentence. So instead she dropped her gaze once more.

Achilleas sighed before he sat next to Ria and handed her one of the towels, “I have to admit I’m very confused with how I feel. I’ve enjoyed these outings with you so much. We both have an incredibly large amount of things in common. We both miss our home and family and it’s the first time on a ship posting. I am in awe every time we discuss science theories as you push me to really work my mind. Every minute I spend with you has me liking you just more and more.”
