Dira’s attention snapped back to Zoi and it took her a moment to process the question. She grinned softly. “Well, as it happens my father is a mixed-media and multimedia artist. I grew up with all kinds of art and music and he always encouraged me to try everything. Some things I took to better than others and when I’m feeling restless I gravitate to creating. Could be painting, could be playing an instrument or singing, could be cooking.” She shrugged. I wouldn’t say i have exceptional talent at any one thing, but it’s all about enjoyment and calmness for me.”

She gestured with her chin towards Haven as she set aside her plate, having finished her pot pie. “What about you?”

She watched Dira entranced with the music. There was something fascinated at how easily she slipped into the music as it flowed around the room. Zoi noted this and seemed not to care at all that Dira had become distracted. When Dira’s attention returned to Zoi, she took it in stride. She settled back in her chair, her eyes never leaving the woman opposite of her, dinner also done.

“I am like most security people, a bit of a athletics buff. I run, I do martial arts. Jujitsu, Tai Chi, Hokkaido mostly. On the non physical side, I love to garden. My quarters are usually quite full of plants I have grown. It is sad that I have to start all over again because of the destruction of so much of the Ogawa but I suppose that means that I can be creative?”

Dira beamed. “Absolutely! And maybe this is a chance for you to really make your space your home. Even if life in Starfleet can be fluid and changing, doesn’t mean we can’t find ways to ground ourselves on a regular basis. I say delve in fully and have some fun with it.”

“I do like being outside a lot. I spent a lot of my youth scrabbling about the parks and green spaces of the city. And both my parents like outdoor activities, though my father more than my mother,” Dira said with a lopsided smirk.

“A man who liked creating art and being outdoors. Quite a combination. I always somehow imagine that artists are a bit like recluses, always indoors and hard to find. I’m sure that is not the case, but I really just have that image stuck in my head.” She shook her head at the image it conjured. A man hunched over his sculpture or painting, murmuring to himself, hair akimbo, the detritus of his work strewn over his apron and shoes… some even in his beard. Small light comes through the tiny window, only enough to illuminate the darkness within the studio. And yet she knew that wasn’t what it was like.

Dira grinned and chuckled slightly. “He’s very different than that. Very social in fact. His favourite past time is to go for walks through the forest and along beaches looking for inspiration or objects that might be useful for a project.” As she spoke of the man, Dira couldn’t help but feel that swell of fondness for Kesren and looked forward to the next time they could talk.

“Well, I am no artist myself.”

“Nonsense,” Myqian said firmly, with a flash of seriousness. “Art, like anything else is a skill that has to be cultivated. If you never practice it, you don’t learn and improve. And I would say it’s even harder for those with heaps of natural talent because they have to work harder to push themselves out of their comfort zones.” Dira leaned toward the table slightly. “And if you doubt your artistic abilities, I hereby accept the challenge of proving you wrong,” she said matter-of-factly, slipping into a smile.
