Willow raised her eyebrows, that was interesting, ”Well regardless of what you’re used to Mister Cascarrabias I assure you that the Ogawa accepts people because they have talent. And if that talent hasn’t been seen elsewhere before they got to us well…more fool the ships that lost them.”

Ria’s eyes grew wide and she looked like a deer in headlights. What did he mean with “her story”? It sounded like he thought she was hiding something. Was he thinking that? Was she hiding something? Her mind was spinning and her heart was racing as she sat there, unable to say or do anything. And as quickly as her cheeks had turned red a moment ago, all the colour seemed to drain from her face just as quickly. After what felt like an eternity to her she manged to ask in a barely audible whisper, “What would you like to know?”

willow felt a flare of annoyance at the reaction Oscar had illicited in the young woman. ”Personally I was in medicine before command. Cardiology.” she glanced at Jarvis who had been silent so far.

“I’ve been… well, everywhere, when you get right down to it… before I got here. Spent ten years of my life in medical research - albeit I was the research project, and other people were the doctors. I think somebody misread my file and thought I would like being on a hospital ship because it’s familiar.” Oscar shrugged. “So, yeah, that’s what I meant by story. You know, just - whatever you want to share. You do have idioms on Bajor, right?”

“O-of course,” Riani stuttered bashfully. Biting down rather hard on her lower lip, she thought for a moment what to say. If it had just been the Captain she was talking she’d probably find it less difficult to answer without making a complete fool of herself. But Oscar was intimidating and quite frankly she felt a bit scared by him. She knew it was silly, but she couldn’t seem to push those feelings aside. Neither could she say why she felt that way. So in the end she whispered softy, “I was born on Deep Space 9 and lived there most of my life. Eventually my family moved back to Bajor and four years ago joined Starfleet. The Ogawa is the first ship I’m serving on.”

Willow raised her eyebrows. “Then I hope we prove to be a ship worthy of your first placement in your starfleet career.” She smiled “you know when we eventually get the ship back up and running, I suppose having the Starbase transition is going to make thing slightly easier for you.” She asked.

Looking shyly up at the Captain, Riani smiled a little and whispered, “I’m sure it will be. And yes, being on the Starbase does feel familiar.” After a moment’s hesitation and taking a deep breath, she continued, “It’s different of course. It’s not a Cardassian station. No personell in Bajoran uniforms. No temple. Yet the … energy feels similar. It’s a good place to be.” The moment she stopped talking she cast her gaze down again, hoping she hadn’t said too much.

Usually, shrinking violets weren’t Oscar’s kind of people; they tended to dislike him, and avoided him whenever possible. It seemed like Ensign Iyun was a little bit more on edge around him than he tended to make others, though. It was one thing to be abrasive to people who could cut it (Engineers tended to be thick-skinned, given that they were trained to exist in stressful environments where the welfare of the entire ship could be affected with a big enough mistake), but Oscar knew when not to push things. He wasn’t sure why he troubled the Ensign, but Oscar knew he needed to back off.

Cai meanwhile was looking at Oscar, “You were a lab experiment? “ he asked his eyes lighting up as if this prospect was the best thing he had ever heard.

“That’s why I’m green, and let me tell you, it isn’t easy,” Oscar replied. “See, my oldest brother was always interested in botany when we were kids - still is, seeing as how he’s a custom florist on a Federation colony - and he was bringing home different kinds of plants and experimenting with them all the time. One day, he snuck into the experimental Botany lab at the university and just grabbed some samples - he was sixteen, and I was six. I liked to get into his stuff, and I stupidly opened a sealed container that contained experimental mold spores.”

Oscar took a drink of the water and looked around for the waiter; he really wanted his food and beverage, because it helped to pace the story if he could pause to take a bite or a sip of something. Nevertheless, he forged ahead.

“They bonded to my skin cells immediately, and I started emitting a noxious odor. Scientists from around the Federation spent the next decade trying to figure out a cure. They best they got was to get rid of the smell. Weekly blood draws, skin scrapings, body scans, injections - the guy who finally figured out how to neutralize the mold got an award or something. I was just along for the ride - and I got a permanent permission for an isolation suit to go along with it.”
