Dira nodded. “It does. And it’s not easy. But it can help reinforce the practice of opening up and getting to know people.” She paused for a moment to take a sip of her refreshed tea. “Don’t discount the small amounts of courage it takes to do what we’re doing right now. You invited me for a meal so we could chat. We could have just done the usual office meeting, but you chose something else. I think you’re not giving yourself enough credit, Zoi. I think you’re doing much better than you think you are.” She almost winked again, but the moment was more serious even if her words were intended to leaven things a bit.

Zoi had not considered the fact that she had invited tree commander to dinner as an example if being social and making connections, but now that she did, she was rather pleased that it had been an effortless and unconscious thing for her to do. The realization that Dira was right and that she had made far more progress than she thought she had causes her to sit back in awe. Her hand coming to her mouth in an unconscious gesture of surprise.
Dira smiled warmly. Even if Haven hadn’t gestured the way she had, she would have known her words had landed true. She didn’t even need to be a telepath to know that much.
Finally she smiled and then laughed a little. “Wow. Thank you for that. I guess in all of this, I really focused on the work and the downside without considering what progress was being made. I didn’t even think about it at all.”

The XO shrugged, still smiling. “Most people don’t. Not a lot of people are in the regular habit of self-examination. And that’s not a condemnation, just a fact. As a student of behaviour, my job is to often point out the things they already know and are not paying attention to or discredit.” She chuckled. “Somehow I don’t think that’s going to change much even if my job has.” It was a clear time where her experience as a therapist was going to benefit her new role as a leader and mentor to the crew.

“Indeed.” She replied with a grin and sipped her tea again. A Bajoran walked past them toward the back and set up on the small stage there. Sometimes, Zoi had seen a table and chairs sitting there. The stage was just a small platform so it wasn’t like the people sitting there would lord over others. Today the chairs and tables were gone and a nice curtained backdrop decorated the space. She set up a small table with a myriad of gadgets, knobs, and buttons. Within moments, she began playing soft synth music that went perfectly with the vibe of the place.
Zoi found she liked the music and it wasn’t so loud that she had to scream or shout to be heard. “I pay so much attention to others, I often forget to look inwards. I blame putting my life on hold for so long.” She said with a wave of dismissal. Looking at Dira with interest, she asked. “What other talents and hobbies do you have?”
