Myqian chuckled. “Well, so long as I get the XO stuff right, we’re all good right?” she said with a wink. “Even if it’s my first proper attempt at the role, I know I have had to practice the basics already, so I’m not overly worried all told.”

She grinned at the wink and sipped her tea.

“What about you, Zoi? Do you have any ambitions for your career?” Dira asked.

Commander Myqian, XO

Her fingers curled around the cup of tea, taking in the warmth. One would expect a person in security to have gruff or perhaps even scarred fingers, but hers were light and delicate looking though they were powerful. Her grip strength was something she prided herself on and yet in holding the delicate china of the tea cup, her grip was as light as a feather.

Zoi sat back in her chair, her gaze wandering the room for a moment to take it in before answering. “Well to be honest I did when I was younger. I imagined myself in the Captains chair one day or maybe when I got tired of touring the galaxy I might return as head of security for Star Fleet. I have not really had those dreams for a long time though. I am afraid taking random long leave of absences to care for a mentally ill mother put most of my life on hold.”

This was a subject she did not often talk about. In fact on her last two tours, she had not spoken to anyone about it at all.

Bracing her elbow on the table and folding her hand, Dira leaned forward slightly and rested her chin on her fingers. “And now? Do you still feel like it’s on hold?” she asked, her brow furrowing slightly around the bulges and indents that were nestled around the bridge of her nose and eyebrows. Small things made their way into her mind. Tiny details that her analytical mind noted and stored away for later.

Commander Myqian, XO

Zoi took a long breath in and released it slowly. There was a bit of hopefulness in her gaze as she replied. “No. I don’t think so. I always came back to Star Fleet when my mother was well enough to live in her assisted space, but her bouts of insanity have been lasting longer and draining her more. I knew I couldn’t hold the pattern indefinitely. Certainly Star Fleet would grow tired of my leaving and returning so much. And also, I don’t think I was helping anymore. The doctors who care for her have been like family to me and they were instrumental in convincing me to leave her entirely in their care with no more leave taking. Whether she is lucid or not, I need to live my life.”

Dira nodded with understanding. There came a point in many situations when a person simply had to admit to themselves that there wasn’t anything more they can do. She had been there, though it had been a rather different set of circumstances.

“You would think that would be an easy decision for someone to make, but it is really not.” She wrinkled her nose for a moment and shook her head. It had taken her nearly a year and many conversations with her mother’s doctors and her own therapist to decide fully. “I finally made the decision and it is freeing to a degree, but are my dreams the same as they were before? I don’t know. I’m sort of starting out so who knows?”

“People often get under the impression that life moves linearly, and while that is true in a strict senes of time, it’s rarely the way events happen. So many things can happen to derail one path we’re on and you have to switch tracks. It’s not easy and it’s not easy to try to reimagine what your life can be when you’ve even partly given up on having something.” Dira offered Zoi an empathetic smile. “I don’t think the decision was ever going to be easy for you. You are most definitely a person who doesn’t make big decisions lightly.”

Lowering her arm, the XO smirked. “Not that I’m profiling you or anything. Just an observation.”

Commander Myqian, XO

“I dont think it would take much to observe that a child who loves their parent has a hard time leaving them when they are in pain.” She smiled softly. “So what now? Do I go for XO and Captain? Do I work to become the head of Star Fleet Security? Do I find someone and start a family? Do I join a band of merry men and seek justice through parlor tricks for the rest of my life?” This time her smile turned to a grin. “What would you recommend?”
