“It’s got a good feeling. I do think that unless there are extreme situations, most assignments are what you make of it. You can choose to be open to it, or not and it informs how you interact with everyone,” Reez said thoughtfully. “My mother actually told me that once. She had been a starship captain as well.” Her mother’s career had certainly impacted her family greatly, but there were some good things that Mel had taken from it, including a desire to go out and explore and serve.

Having warmed up to a slow jog that was increasingly becoming faster, Talyn timed her words. “Sounds like a smart woman. I think ‘approachable’ is the right way to go on the Ogawa.” She took a few breaths while continuing to move. “At least, that’s what I intend to be on this ship.”

“I think it’s a good plan,” Mel replied with a soft smile.
Zoi stayed at a moderate pace. Her legs were long, her body lean and she ate up the miles easy enough. One would expect this level of physical fitness from security personnel. She wasn’t showing off, just doing as she would. There was no reason for her to feel the need. Everyone was in a jovial mood together. “I would have to agree with your mother. You get what you put in most of the time. I find that level of energy changes as I get to know the assignment and put my feet in. You never know exactly what you are walking into be it a new crew or veteran.”

Mel chuckled slightly and nodded. “There is definitely that. I still have yet to have a remotely normal beginning on any of my ships, and I’m still not sure if it was just me or something about being in Starfleet in general. But then again I was a cadet during the Dominion War and that was my introduction to ship life. So… my scale is likely a bit skewed,” she said with a slight grin.

Kree nodded and internalized her thoughts about when she first boarded the Ogawa. The pace of the treadmill sped up and she had to concentrate to keep her pace. Conversation at this point was pretty much out of the question. Time passed in amicable silence and finally, the speed began to drop back down. Talyn was covered with glistening layer of sweat by then and grabbed the towel from the handlebars and wiped her face as she ran.

“Mine too, ma’am. Mine too.” She said. If Melaia wanted to talk, Zoi could. She wasn’t running fast, just a mild pace that would keep up her heart rate without over stimulating it after strength training. The counselor’s words rang in her mind, reminding her that she needed to reach out, make friends. She needed to risk in order to gain. She could go back to her quiet quarters and enjoy the rest of her day entirely in peace with food from the replicator like always, or she could shovel up some courage and start trying. Finally she stopped her treadmill and turned to the two women, Melaia and Talyn. “Would you both care to join me for dinner in the lounge this evening?”
