Drake considered very carefully what he was going to say and do before going into this meeting. He didn’t like kissing up, but he didn’t need another enemy. When he got to the door and pressed the chime, all he had was that he happened to be coming directly from a successful surgery, so nothing could go wrong.

“Come in,” came the prompt reply.

The small room was one of several guest offices that the Starbase had for visiting staff. Aside from a desk and two guest chairs, there was a shelf and a replicator.

Behind the desk, Dira was focused on her computer terminal rather intently, Looking up, her dark eyes took in Marshall and she smiled. “Hello, come on in and have a seat she said, gesturing to one of the two standard chairs. “And you can remind me who you are and let me know how I can help you,” she added, tapping a couple things on her terminal and then switching it off to focus on Drake.

Drake sat, and wondered if the XO had done her homework on the crew. “Dr Drake Marshall. Chief of Surgery. Department heads and section chiefs have to report to you.”

She smiled, sincerely as well. “Indeed they do. It’s nice to meet you Doctor Marshall.” Dira folded her arms and rested them on the desk. “So, bit of a busy time lately. How’s your section faring while here? I know the Starbase staff are happy to incorporate the crew into the duty roster where it makes sense to, but different places, different practices and all that.”
