Dira nodded and gave Mason a sympathetic look. “Look, it should have been yours, yes, and our mutual… antagonist did interfere. Don’t be too mad at the captain for going along with it initially. There is a measure of trust you have to have between an exec team. I know for a fact she wasn’t fully aware of the personal animosity between the various… parties.” Dira was doing her best to be tactful but was suddenly wishing Bob was also telepathic so they could converse without worrying about being overheard. She was, after all, enjoying her meal and wasn’t wanting to leave just yet.

Well that’s a relief, he thought. Kind of.

She set down her spoon. “But the thing to remember is that pettiness only gets you so far. He is finding that out now and we are both getting what we wanted, even if it wasn’t under the exact circumstances we were expecting. Rise above, Bob. Be the bigger person,” she said with a wink, even as she smirked. After all, they had had enough conversations to know that they both had their issues with Commander Franks. Dira hadn’t gone into depth, preferring to have managed it herself. It wasn’t just that she took over when Franks utterly failed to do the most basic and reasonable course of action, but she had made she they had lived, despite his failures. And he never forgave her and had been quietly making her life hell ever since. She would miss Elise and was sorry the captain still had to deal with the jerk for a minute longer, but Elise could handle Franks, that much she knew.

“Yeah, yeah, ‘living well is the best revenge’ and all that.” Despite the dismissive words, he actually did appreciate and internalize that advice.

Myqian just smirked and scooped up the last of her soup.

“You’re doing pretty well at this ‘Command decorum’ thing already,” he said a minute later. “Like the practice you’re doing here is paying off for when someone who would actually overhear it who would care might be around.” Obviously he didn’t quite share the same assessment for the need for decorum in this particular mess hall on this particular transport ship.

“Well, that was the idea,” she said with a light laugh. “Better get it down now, lest it bites me in the ass later. Goodness knows I don’t want a stupid slip up to be the first impression our new ship gets of me.”

“I might need to practice my usual air of stoicism again before we get there, if the Ogawa is in as bad a shape as that report suggested.”

Dira sighed slightly. “Yeah, sorry about that. No one’s fault, but not exactly the situation we thought we’d get. Those pesky circumstances rear their ugly head again” she joked. “Most of it seems to be dry dock work. It’s honestly amazing they were able to even tow the ship back.”
