“Well, not quite like that. He is probably still going to be moving to a different ship, one more… suitable to his skills,” Dira said, managing to somehow maintain her professional demeanour. In private, she was quite happy to state her feelings openly about the man she rather quite loathed, and though Mason was someone she was willing to be that open with, she thought it was better in this public space to err on the side of caution. Scuttlebutt was a rather dangerous thing at times.

Bob was less concerned about scuttlebutt than she was, especially at this particular moment.

“Like a garbage scow?” he asked somewhat loudly. “Oh wait, no… that can’t be right. Someone might have to dock a garbage scow. Docking can be very similar to landing, in that you need to carefully match relative velocity with another object in space. We know how well Franks handles that.”

Dira couldn’t help but snort and broth spilled off her spoon. She had to set it down and then gave Bob a ‘really?’ sort of expression.

Just a beat passed before Bob continued. “Sorry, I’m doing that thing where I tell the Executive Officer things they already should know. It’s a habit I need to break now that it’s you, and it’s already hurt my career at least once. Or… did it?” She would know the question was about, which was the job that Bob had really wanted.

She considered Mason and shook her head. “No, I don’t think it did. At least not long-term. Perhaps we should consider the last while a ‘blip’ n the grand scheme of things. After all, I think we can both agree that it is very nice to be away from that… person.” There was a gleam in her eyes as she sipped on her soup. Yes, she had wanted to say something much more inflammatory. But hey, impulse control was one of those command officer requirements the brass tended to favour and Dira had it in abundance. Perhaps too much at points, but that was a different story entirely.

“Yes, that person,” he repeated. “I was under the impression that I was passed over on the Calypso’s chief’s job specifically because of that person. Hence the filling of the Chief Engineer vacancy there to someone who… well… you know… exceeded the standards of personhood adequately, but… you know…”

Left unspoken was the fact that the former occupant of that position had assured him he was the recommended candidate that had been passed upward to ‘Elise’.

Dira nodded and gave Mason a sympathetic look. “Look, it should have been yours, yes, and our mutual… antagonist did interfere. Don’t be too made a the captain for going along with it initially. There is a measure of trust you have to have between an exec team. I know for a fact she wasn’t fully aware of the personal animosity between the various… parties.” Dira was doing her best to be tactful but was suddenly wishing Bob was also telepathic so they could converse without worrying about being overheard. She was, after all, enjoying her meal and wasn’t wanting to leave just yet.

She set down her spoon. “But the thing to remember is that pettiness only gets you so far. He is finding that out now and we are both getting what we wanted, even if it wasn’t under the exact circumstances we were expecting. Rise above, Bob. Be the bigger person,” she said with a wink, even as she smirked. After all, they had had enough conversations to know that they both had their issues with Commander Franks. Dira hadn’t gone into depth, preferring to have managed it herself. It wasn’t just that she took over when Franks utterly failed to do the most basic and reasonable course of action, but she had made she they had lived, despite his failures. And he never forgave her and had been quietly making her life hell ever since. She would miss Elise and was sorry the captain still had to deal with the jerk for a minute longer, but Elise could handle Franks, that much she knew.
