Mark was lost in thought. Things were changing. Again. The USS Veda needed a new chief and Starfleet had shuffled officers around. On one side, he would be promoted to full Lieutenant. On the other, the Ogawa was just starting to feel like home. He packed his things into a box, turning to remove his Marine stripes and medals last. He had spent years in the marines, now encapsulated in that frame. The Ogawa would be the same way.

The doors to the office parted and a human Lieutenant with the golden uniform shoulders of Engineering took one step through the doorway before stopping. The man’s facial expression stayed relatively unchanged, but the halt was not exactly planned.

“I’m sorry,” he said politely. “I didn’t expect anyone to be here, otherwise I would have rung the chime.” The unasked question that was obvious ran through Bob’s mind: should I leave you to it, or…?

Mark was pulled out of his trance. “Lieutenant Mason, Robert. Reporting from the USS Calypso for duty as Chief Engineer.” He extended a hand. “You’re reporting as my relief. Not that I expected us to cross paths.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE (Outgoing)

“Yes, I am supposed to say all of that, aren’t I?” He asked with a smile and shook the man’s hand. “You must be Lieutenant Pierce, Mark, who is now standing relieved. Off to larger things?”

— Lt. Robert Mason, CE (Incoming)

“Different things. USS Veda needs a new chief. Old Galaxy class. So off I go.” He nodded to Robert. “So. Did you request a transfer, or are you just here on orders? This being Starfleet, anything could be accurate.”

“Oh, I requested it. I was been on the Calypso for a few years now, and after playing ‘Assistant Chief Engineer’ for a while I was ready for the next step.” That was all true, though it glossed over all of the less flattering details.

“Though that was I heard about… you know… the thing.”

– Lt. Robert Mason, CE (incoming)

“A lot happens on this ship. You’ll have to enlighten me as to what is now rumour.” Mark was testing Robert ever so slightly. If offered the chance, would he speak freely?
