With her medical and psychological evaluation done, there was only one thing left for Riani to do: Reporting for duty with her superior officer! And unlike those aforementioned evaluations, that conversation was actually something she was looking forward to. While she tended to keep to herself, she was excited to meet her new boss and fellow scientists. Not to mention that she couldn’t wait to start working. So it was with quick, almost bouncing steps that she made her way towards the Chief Science Officer’s office.

Upon arrival Ria made sure that her uniform was still in order and her long brown hair still neatly tied back in a French braid. Yet otherwise she didn’t lose any time before pressing the chime next to the door.

A voice came through the intercom, “Come on in.”

Taking one more deep breath and squaring her narrow shoulders, Riani stepped into the office. Without missing a beat, she said, “Ensign Iyun reporting for duty, Sir.” Everything about her seemed to send a double bind; at least to a close observer: she appeared to be glad to be here, yet also hesitant, maybe even reluctant. And while the smile on her face was genuine, it couldn’t fully mask the underlying emotions of … was it sadness? Fear? …?
