Ana joined him in his laugh, perhaps more empathically than might be expected. She neatly held out a nearby waste bin for his stick and stuck it back in its proper location without even a glance. “Is there anything you’d like to discuss with me as part of this process?” she asked, feeling that they had established their mutual disagreeable feeling regarding main fleet service.

He considered for a moment. “No I don’t believe so. I mean I am an open book if you had any questions for me I would answer them but no, I don’t think I am in need of mental health at the moment.” He swallowed the remains of the candy then twisted his face slightly. “I am glad that the engineering staff seem more or less… Behaved. I didn’t like my last ship They were difficult to work with and, well. Annoying.”

“I don’t have any other questions,” Ana responded, businesslike and firm. As Woods provided his commentary on his previous ship, her pressed together lips turned up slightly in amusement. “This is my first shipboard assignment, so I’m still reserving judgment. I’m used to working with other scientis… doctors.” She caught her vocal misstep just as she had almost finished the word. The shift from working in a lab to as a clinical psychiatrist still hadn’t completely sunken in and, at this point, she feared it never would. “Well, if there isn’t anything else, you are cleared for duty and you are free to go,” she responded again, her tone again returning businesslike.

Woods stood and snapped to attention before leaving at the dismissal. He waddled a little, his pudgy body not really needing the sucker. Once he was through the door he strolled down the hallway and back to engineering.
