Ana’s office was precisely as it had been when she had joined the ship, although she had conceded to place an old-fashioned framed version of her medical school diploma on the wall behind her desk. The only other personal touch was the utilitarian jar of lollipops positioned on her desk, which she now slid toward Woods so that he could make his selection. “Do you commonly feel rage or anger?” she asked as he did so.

Darren, Psychiatrist

Woods put the lolly into his mouth and sucked on it contemplatively for a while. “No,” he finally said as he slipped the candy out and started to gesture with it when he spoke. “Frustration yes, but anger only rarely and never rage. I can’t think of anything that would make me rage, to be honest. I suppose if my family were held hostage or something extreme like that.”

Ana made a note on the PaDD beside her and then set it precisely 1” in from the bottom left corner of her desk. “What do you feel frustrated about?” she asked next, staring contemplatively at the lollipop in Woods’ hand as opposed to making eye contact with him. She hadn’t considered overtly that patients couldn’t talk around the confection, but perhaps that had been her inadvertent purpose in supplying them.

Darren, Psychiatrist

“The usual things,” Woods responded before tasting the lollipop once more giving it a few seconds in his mouth before he removed it again and elaborated. “Complex problems, vexing crew mates, things of that nature.” He paused for a moment before adding on the end almost as an after thought, “Really Doctor I am quite a dull man with a dull life.”

Ana couldn’t help herself as she laughed slightly. Her cheeks reddened as she caught herself and she found herself focusing on the white cylindrical lollipop stick in Woods’ hand. “Are you happy with that?” she asked, finally, not quite sure where to start with the variety of material that he had given her to prod at.

Darren, CoP

Woods pondered her answer a moment then nodded. “I don’t think I am cut out to be in command. I used to be a DH but… It didn’t suit me. I wasn’t very good at it. I am mostly a researcher by nature.” He put the sweet into his mouth and rolled his tongue over it considering the doctor before tacking on with a small shrug, “I’d rather be at home drinking tea with Pol than on a ship, but the Old Man said I needed some main fleet experience.”

“The Old Man?” Ana asked, distractedly, as her attention was focused on the movement of Woods’ jaw as he devoured the lollipop. She shook her head minutely and forced her eyes back up to his to study him as he replied.

Darren, CoP

“Fleet Captain K’hal. He heads a sub unit within special projects within the corps,” Woods explained with a soft sigh. “He doesn’t like it when we call him the old man but he is rather grumpy. I suppose that is what you get for being a… Well you can look up his record if you are that curious. he isn’t exactly a pleasant person to be around but he is brilliant when it comes to systems engineering.”

Woods paused and then continued, unprompted, “He does like to see his engineers succeed though, and believes that we are more useful to him when we have main fleet experience. Get to know the product and the people, you know?”
