Gordon smiled embarrassedly, “Sorry, I didn’t even introduce myself. Yes I am Crewman Muir, I’m here for my boarding psychological assessment. Is now an okay time to do this ma’am?” He said in his somewhat strange part Scottish part Federation standard accent.

“Yes,” Ana replied simply. She shifted slightly in her seat as her eyes swept down in an outwardly assessing manner before she began to speak again. “Is there anything you would like to share that would impact your ability to serve as security personnel aboard the Ogawa?” As she gained experience with the boarding evaluation process, she had begun to find this an excellent question to start off with in order to conclude these awkward meetings as quickly as possible.

Gordon appeared to stiffen under her gaze, it felt like someone was scanning him with a tricorder. He was confused by the question for a moment, she might tell by his scrunched up fore head as he mentally processed it.

“I’m not sure ma’am? Maybe my accent? I don’t know…I feel like I’m good to go! I just want to sort of get my teeth into actually doing my job for real now, if you know what I mean?” He said with obvious enthusiasm, although tinged with a bit of nervousness.

Ana’s head slowly tilted to the side as Muir spoke, the black locks of hair immediately falling back from behind her ear as she did so. She looked to be an odd combination of both bemused and confused at his response. Her eyebrows furrowed slightly as she caught her lip between her teeth again for the briefest of moments and then lightly ran her tongue along her top teeth. “We have a very skilled dentist on board if you are having trouble with your teeth,” she finally answered, unsure of what his dental hygiene have to do with integrating into the crew of the Ogawa. She paused for a moment and then offered a different tact. “What made you choose security as a career path?”

Darren, Psychiatrist
Gordon watched the woman’s strange bird like head tilt, he almost copied her out of instinct but caught himself with the barest movement of his head. He blinked, did she really just take his dentist comment literally? Strange woman.

“I think I’ll survive without another visit to the tooth puller ma’am.” he replied using it as a delaying tactic to think of an answer.

“I joined security because I wanted to do something useful with my life ma’am and well I’ve always been a more practical man than a theoretical person. I’d given basic deck duties on a freighter for a year or two so I had my fill doing basic “Operations” stuff. Add to that my father did a stint in security prior to his transfer to operations, he always spoke highly of his earlier years in Starfleet so I thought: “Why not?”” he replied with a smile, it was true. Mostly. He didn’t add that he was terrible at mathematics so a career in engineering or science wasn’t really an option, he also didn’t really like the idea of sticking his hands into another persons innards so Medical wasn’t really in his wheelhouse.

Somewhere across the ship, in the bowels of the dental suite, Doctor Joe Black lifted his cowled skull and peered around. It was as if he had heard his name being invoked. He waited a moment longer then picked up a cup of chamomile tea between his long skeletal fingers and sipped once through his clenched, grinning teeth. He then went back to reading his knitting pattern.

Gordon shuddered momentarily, it was like someone had just ran a hand up his spine. This ship was getting weirder and weirder by the minute.

Ana nodded once, briefly, to acknowledge his answer to her question. She jotted down a few notes on a nearby PaDD and then returned her gaze to Muir again. “Is this a long term career plan for you or do you have other goals in your life?” she again queried, not really responding or acknowledging his previous answer. She shuddered lightly as she again thought about the Ogawa’s dentist but quickly forced her attention back to her patient.

Darren, CoP

Gordon was curious to see what she was she writing but restrained himself from leaning over to see what was written on the PaDD.

“I’m not sure ma’am, I would love to try for officer again but frankly I’m not sure. I suppose I find this more enjoyable than the PaDD work or doing the local shipping lane run back home.” He said somewhat a dismissively, it still hurt that he had failed the entry test and the thought of failing twice was almost too much to consider.
