M’Nalie blinked at the psychiatrist. “You have a funny way of accepting hospitality. But if I was confined to quarters nobody told me so. I have been volunteering my time in engineering since with the ship damaged and stuck in strange space it’s hardly a good time to not have everyone working.”, she rumbled matter of factly, “I suppose now that I am aware that I am not supposed to leave my quarters I will have to remain in them. I will discuss it with my dept head, who has been far to busy to notice.”, And M’Nalie kneeled to the table and folded her handpaws in her lap. “I do not understand you. Nor do you understand me. But it is better to resolve this problem. So I wanted to meet with you so you could appologise.”, M’Nalie stated calmly.

Ensign M’Nalie Eshenti. Engineer.

Ana stared blankly at the engineer. “Apologize?” she repeated back. Her arms crossed protectively across her torso as she stared, unblinkingly. “Starfleet has entrusted me with the task of ensuring that you are fit to serve on a vessel. Outbursts are not compatible with that fitness.” Her black eyes darkened as she studied M’Nalie. “Since you believe that a lack of understanding is at the root of this issue, I would be happy to refer your case to Commander Reez. Would you like me to schedule you an appointment with him?”

M’Nalie sighed. “Starfleet requires many things. Explain to me what you see as a outburst. From my point of view you asked questions designed to entrap me into admitting my past failings. This upset me because my people do not use such dishonest methods. When it dawned on me that this was the case I tried to leave. At which point it being obvious that I was upset you ordered me to stay. Then because I decided to no longer answer your dishonest, unethical questions you called security. If I talk to your superior that is what I will tell him. I have given you as per the customs of my people a chance to appologise. You have chosen to instead insult my hospitality and treat me badly once more. I have no choice but to register a complaint against you with my Clan. Iwill do you the curtosy of sending Starfleet Command, The Captain and yourself a copy of my complaint. Such dealings will require a representative of my Clan to be present for any proceedings. So this will require both of us to leave this ship. “, M’Nalie stood to her full height, “Get out. Your presence offends me nostrils.”, She said in a deeper and obvious tone of disgust.

As M’Nalie ranted, Ana aspirated a slight bit of saliva in shock at the words spewing from the Caitian. She attempted several times to respond, but instead ended up doubled over with her hands braced against her knees, gasping for breath as her pale skin turned a rosy color. Tears ran from her black eyes as she finally caught her breath again and straightened her body. She swiped across her face with the back of her hand, her frustration evident in the jerkiness of the gestures.

Her voice hoarse from the coughing fit, she finally responded, “my job, Ensign, is to ask difficult questions to see if you have addressed those failings and moved forward to them. Otherwise, those… failings…” her voice trailed off for a moment as she visibly steadied herself, “… can get your crew mates killed. If those questions are against your clan’s belief system, then your clan has no place in this organization.”

Despite the heated nature of her words and the slight tracks of tears on her cheeks, Ana’s voice was extremely calm as the hoarseness faded away. She kept her eyes carefully on the Caitian as she reached for the comm badge affixed to her uniform tunic:

=/\= Darren to Reez. Sir, I require your assistance in Ensign M’Nalie Eshenti’s quarters. The ensign has requested another psychiatrist to perform her fitness for duty evaluation. =/\=

With that, she coolly turned on her heel and made her way out of M’Nalie’s quarters. As the door slid closed behind her, she leaned against the corridor beside it, her head tilting back to rest on it as she closed her eyes briefly. Several deep, calming breaths later, she silently leaned forward again and made her way back to her office.

M’Nalie for her part was confused. Her inability to be a political leader and role model for her clan had nothing to do with her being qualified to repair things on the ship. She noted what was in her opinion the problem. The councilor was apparently insane. She went over the events as they had happened one by one and her reactions to each one. Starfleet regulations were clear on this subject. Federation law was clear on this subject. Each individual culture within it’s borders was to be respected equally. The problem between herself and the councilor was likely a fundemental flaw in the councilor program. It is impossible for a member of any species to judge the fitness of a member of a different specises as every species and subspecies had different ideas on what is normal..
