Mel gaze a lopsided grin. “Well, except for the one slight issue of the triage deck possibly being needed for medical emergencies.” Her grin deepened. “think you can guarantee us not to need the space before we get them home? Otherwise, it’s going to be more stressful on them than where they are currently. You know, use that magic first officer wand of yours,” she teased. Of course Brooks couldn’t guarantee anything. No one could. And she understood that better than most. But still, it was nice to throw a little banter into the mix.

“I don’t have a wand,” she played, “I have a genie, and I’ve already used two of my wishes.” She thought for awhile. “If we were to need more triage space, there are plently of areas of the ship that are able to be converted. The entire ship can perform as a triage deck if need be. Besides, you said yourself, they don’t need much space.” She activated a nearby screen panel and retrieved the specs for the triage deck. “We could reconfigure this area as ‘guest quarters,’” she noted, pointing to a section of the triage deck away from the transporters. “It wouldn’t take much effort to reconfigure the structure, however, filling it with natural elements from their environment might prove more difficult.”
With a slight smirk at the genie comment, Reez eyed the specs with the eye of someone used to assessing and making decisions. She gave a nod in agreement. “It would work. We can easily cordon off an area, though localizing the atmosphere for them will take a bit of finagling. I can talk to Engineering?” she suggested.
Although Brooks appreciated the conversation so far, it was work as usual. She and her daughter had been on the ship quite sometime and although Sadee seemed to be adjusting well, the commander wasn’t faring so well. She had befriended the captain, and exchanged some words with some ensigns, but she was lonely. As her wedding anniversary had recently come and gone, she had been feeling extraordinarily lonely. “Melaia, how long have you been married?”
-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO
The Betazoid regarded Brooks, her ebony gaze intense. “Five years now. Why? What’s on your mind, Amari?” she ventured.

“Five years?” she asked, she intoned on an intake of breath instead of the exhale. “I think about Andy, my husband, every day. We had five years of happiness. We were always busy, pulled in different directions, but I was happy.” Suddenly her face became sullen. “Then, he was gone, and I had two girls to raise.” Her eyes glistened as tears threatened to spill. “Shanti buried herslef in her studies to deal with it. Sadee was too young to remember most of that time, but recently she has gotten so angry. I’m beginning to think that accepting this position was a mistake. Andy’s dream was a command track, not mine. I always pictured myself being on a ship he commanded, mostly stay-at-home, with an occasional shift in sickbay, and available in an emergency. As XO here, although I love the Owie, I feel I am neglecting Sadee.”
Amari had spilled her guts as though she had been keeping it all in for far too long. She suddenly became embarrassed and looked at the scientist apologetically. “I am so sorry Melaia. I don’t even know you, and you have much more important things to deal with than my dead husband and rebellious teenager. I have absolutely no idea why I told you all of that.” She smiled and forced a laugh as a tear finally spilled over before falling from her cheekbone to the floor.
