“Quite.” Drake said with limited effort to hide his distaste. “He’s a genius. Who just happens to be a sociopath. No wonder Dr Walker lost it.”

“Captain. Three years ago I was offered this same job on a much larger ship, the USS Hope. I turned it down. My grandfather said his only regret in practicing medicine was settling for a desk. I misunderstood him and ran away. I’m not making that mistake again. The USS Ogawa will have the best surgical department in Starfleet. Even… god help me… if I have to housebreak Jasper Jarvis.”

Willow smiled, “work on house breaking yourself first. As I said before Brilliance doesn’t make up for experience, you can have youth or experience not both. Being a leader isn’t about breaking people it’s about encouraging them to work to their best for your patients best interests.”

“I’ll figure it out. The only real command I’ve had was ER. Do or die. So this is going to be a jarring change of pace. And I guess by 27 it’s getting harder to sell the youth. It’s just experience now. Once you’ve gotten a birthday card that says ‘countdown to 30’, it’s time to give up on that youth I didn’t have.”

With a laugh Willow shook her head. “Maybe that was true in the 21st century but given that most humans love to be well into their hundreds now it’s maybe best if you consider your teenage years to last until you’re 20 and what would have been your youthful 20s till at least 40 now.”

“Beware what you say about teenage years. It applies to Cai too.” He remembered his brief experience with the disaffected youth. “I never checked up on him. I trust he’s back to ignoring everyone with whatever PaDD or mini PaDD is handy.”

Willow sighed again, “He is still in the prefers his own company phase yes. Thank you for fixing his arm after the fall.” She smiled “I understand sibling issues, believe me.” She took a sip of tea.

“He might not want to talk, but if he needs to, my brother and I have a… troubled history.”

“You had best report back to Doctor Walker.” She said eventually. “He will direct you from here.”
