Drake had just finished moving into his office, per his assignment, when he decided it was time for the first department meeting. He was being held to a higher standard now, but challenge had always been his best friend. =/\=Doctors McKnight, Parr, Jacobs, Summers, and Jarvis please report to the Chief of Surgery’s office.=/\=

Within a few minutes everyone but Jarvis was seated in Drake’s office. “Well, I have a slightly different mission statement for Dr Jarvis anyway, so let’s get started. We all know each other… at least through reputation.” There was a light chuckle. “The way I see it, we have three surgeons and two interns. Good arithmetic.” He looked at Jacobs and Summers. “Your primary job is going to be to assist the three of us during operations. There is no substitute for practical experience. And maybe, if you show the right calm and the right skill, you’ll get to lead with one of us supervising.”

He looked at McKnight and Parr. “We’re all familiar with the fun of the surgeon’s on call schedule. That I can’t change. The good news is this. In emergencies, I have clearance to allow Jacobs and Summers to work with us.” He looked back at the duo. “As long as they ask permission before each operation.” Back to the surgeons. “Most of your lives aren’t going to change, but you have a little assistance. Questions?”

Parr raised her hand. “Is Dr Jarvis going to be operating with us?” She seemed concerned. “That’s a complicated matter. Generally, no. But he is a cardiothoracic surgeon by specialty. Should the need arise, it’s possible. But he’d be closely supervised.” Parr nodded. Jacobs raised his hand. “Sir, are we on call like the doctors?” Drake mulled for a second. “Yeah. Yeah, you are. It’s a hard schedule, but I’d rather you see it firsthand than hear us complain and get second thoughts. You probably won’t be called as much as we are, but I want you to keep your combadges close. Learn what that feels like.”
