After leaving Walker’s office, Drake had a new curiosity. =/\=Dr Marshall to Captain Taylor. Dr Walker said you had something to discuss with me?=/\=-Dr Drake Marshall
=^= Come to my office Doctor Marshall in fifteen minutes.=^= Willow’s voice responded calmly. She waited in her office for him to arrive .
Willow Taylor
CO15 minutes was roughly how long that walk took anyway. At least when wondering what business the Captain could have with you besides throwing you out an airlock. Drake arrived at Captain Taylor’s office 15 minutes later on the dot. An accident, but one he was proud of.
-Dr Drake Marshall
When the Doctor presses the chime Willow’s voice called out for him to enter. She looked up from her desk and watched him enter. “Have a seat Doctor Marshall.” She invited and once he was comfortable she looks him up and down and then back to her computer screen, “Doctor Walker isn’t very happy with you, you know.” She said stoically.
Willow Taylor
CO“He made his displeasure… vehemently clear.” Drake couldn’t help but wonder if he’d walked into a trap.
-Dr Drake Marshall
Willow sighed deeply. “You are a brilliant surgeon Drake…one of the best I have ever seen.” She looked at her computer where is record was on display. “But you have a huge chip on your shoulder…well less a chip a more a Boulder. Care to explain?”
Willow Taylor
CODrake dreaded these moments. Opening up. “I was 16 when I left for medical school. Prodigy sounds great until you’re by far the youngest around. I was 17 when I proposed my method of surgery. It took me months to get them to see its efficacy. That it wasn’t just a teenager rebelling against his teachers. No one took me seriously until I was 24 and moved to ER. When I could keep pace there, I finally got a little respect. And then… I had my fill. There’s only so many times you can lose patients before the first incision. Only so many times you can climb into the collapsed mineshaft because ‘you’re the young one.’ I moved here… and started over. I’m 27 now and I still get treated like that 16 year old kid. I walk into a room like I own it because I have to. Because I need that confidence to do what I do. And contrary to what everyone seems to think, I worked my ass off to be here doing it. I’ve done things… you would be justified in ordering me not to do. But I pulled it off.” He fell silent for a moment.
“I lost the end of my youth and my relationship with my brother so that I could be a doctor, the best. Tell me Captain Taylor, was it worth it? Or did I waste my time?”
-Dr Drake Marshall
Willow listened. She interlocked her fingers and considered him as he spoke. “Perhaps part of the reason Doctor Marshall that you get treated like a teenager is because you expect to be? At times you are acting like a perpetual teenager not a professional person.” She glanced back at his file then made he contact with him. “You know, I hand picked the medical department for this ship? I was given names, files and picked the people that I thought were the best of the best . And for the record, you have no idea what I would or would not order you to do because you do t know me.”
She was quiet a moment as she considered, watching him carefully. Then she pulled the computer toward herself and began typing. “You want respect Doctor Marshall then perhaps you should learn to give it first. Brilliance does not give you the right to go around acting as if you are better than others or that what you perceive as menial medical tasks around here are beneath you. Jarvis is a perfect example for you on what not to become. You should heed Doctor Walker, he like you is brilliant in his field and he has a lot he can teach you. You want good bedside manner, Doctor Scott is a virtual paragon of patience speak to her.”
“You feel the need to puff out your chest and strut around to command respect then let’s give you a chance to earn it. As of right now you are officially promoted to Chief Surgeon. You will be assigned an office of your own in secondary sickbay. You will still answer to Doctor Walker as chief of staff but I caution you, if something goes wrong, if a junior or non promoted member of staff or a non section head complains or if someone dies when it is determined that it could have been prevented you will be held accountable.”
She looked at him again, “ You will learn quickly that you never stop being 16 in some peoples eyes. But remember, insubordination from a Junior Officer is bad enough, from a section head it’s unacceptable do I make myself clear?”
