USS Ogawa
Part 1 - A Call From Home
Drake was sitting in his quarters, a replicated curry for dinner, and plenty of work to be done. And then a call came in. FSA Headquarters. Drake hit accept. Instead of an investigating agent, something worse was on the other side, his brother. “Nate.” He said, coldly. “Drake. I called to thank you.”
“You’re going to have to enlighten me, we haven’t spoken in two years. What did I do that’s praiseworthy?”
“You finally accepted mom’s case.”
“I told you before. It’s a need based system, HQ processes the requests first. They never made it to me.”
“That doesn’t matter. Whatever happened, happened. The important thing is; you’re going to save her now.” A new casefile arrived on one of Drake’s PaDDs. “I just got her file.” Nate looked at Drake expectantly. He picked up the PaDD.
[Patient Name: Marshall, Jennifer]
[Condition: Cardiac Sarcoma]
A series of scans followed. Drake felt his brother’s eyes on him as he went through it all. “God.”
“That’s not what I wanted to hear from my mom’s surgeon.”
“So that’s how it is Nate? She gets on a shuttle and two years of animosity go away? Unlike her other doctors, I’m not going to load you up with BS and send you home with more hope than you need. It’s bad. The tumour is… large. Operable, maybe. I want my own images when she gets here. You should get on the shuttle with her. Use your leave time. I’m guessing every civilian surgeon said they wouldn’t come within the same solar system as this case. That’s how you made it past HQ. This is a Hail Mary. But, you have Starfleet’s best. So… you don’t have to trust me as a person. Trust me as a doctor.”
“You want me there in case she dies?”
“And because she’ll want to see her son before she goes into the OR.”
“I’ll see you in a few days Drake.”
“Bye Nate.”
