<snip>“Every minute I spend out here is a minute I’m not accelerating the degeneration of my optic nerves by staring at PaDDs for 8 hours a day,” Brad said with a shrug.
“I hear they have a read aloud function,” Jessica responded with a wicked grin, comfortably poking fun at her new boss. “Or I’d be happy to arrange an eye exam…”
“I can read them faster than they can read themselves to me,” Brad said with a shrug. “But it has been a while since I had my eyes checked. Good couple years, at least.”
She couldn’t imagine what would lead someone to drop medicine for a life of administrative paperwork, but she filed that away as a conversation for another time. It was probably best not to insult one’s superior’s life choices at such an early stage in their interaction. As she pondered this, his question had gone unnoticed and finally, after a beat, she realized he was waiting for an answer and bubbled, “oh, I love food!”

“You’re eating regularly, then?” Brad asked, keying for a deeper scan from the biobed. It could be something simple, like she simply forgot a meal now and then, but it also could be something chronic, since this seemed to be an issue previously noted.
Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff“Oh, sure,” Jessica responded with a shrug. She didn’t really keep track of when she remembered to eat something. She wiggled impatiently on the biobed and batted her green eyes at Walker. “Will I live, sir?” she queried.
Lieut (j.g.) Lemann
“Barring something interesting happening in the warp core, sure. Stop skipping meals though, you’re a little underweight,” Brad said, logging the scan results in her file and signing off on it marking her fit for duty.
“Now, you can take over as duty officer in here for the rest of the shift, since I put the other two docs in time-out. I need to go figure out a discipline plan for the both of them.”
Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffWhile she had let the comment drop initially, Jessica grinned at him and commented, “maybe we should check your eyes before you strain them too hard on that discipline plan.” Hopping down from the biobed, she leaned against it as she innocently waited for Walker’s response.

He shrugged. “Sure, why not. I’ll get to see you in action, and stay away from my office longer. Win-win.”
Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffGesturing to the biobed that she had just vacated, Jessica’s green eyes danced as she repeated his earlier statement, “up you go!” After a firm pat on the now vacant bed, she fetched a medical tricorder and began some basic scans to check on Walker’s visual acuity.
