“Last time I fractured something, it healed well but required a mild amount of PT. Are we looking at similar here?” Reez asked the doctor.~Melaia Reez
“We should be pretty much done with the actual healing. Given that you fractured your wrist, a few weeks PT, nothing serious, but better to ease it back into full function. Rule of thumb, if it hurts; don’t do it. Anything else before I go?”
-Dr Drake Marshall
Melaia smirked. “No, thank you. And I’ll try my best not to overdo it.” How she’d manage that with twins moving about, well, her and Jon would just need to figure it out. She flexed her hand and turned the wrist, feeling that she had full motion. “It feels good, thanks again.”
~Melaia Reez
Drake nodded. “If you want someone to check the kids, Dr Scott is upstairs, and Dr Lemann should be somewhere in all of this mess. Paediatric surgery is more my speed than paediatric medicine.” He looked at Cai, “Young Master Taylor, you were by the door for a while, anything interesting come in while we were here?”
-Dr Drake Marshall
Cai shrugged and pushed his hair back from his eyes, “There’s someone with a bread knife in their foot over there I think. I don’t know her though, looks like a science NE.” He looked at Mel.
“Will said I had to stay here, it’s apparently safer. Do you want me to like…I duno I could sit with the twins or something, do they like music?” He turned his mini PaDD in his hands. “Or I could help you find Doctor Scott…”
Cai
“Good idea. Teenagers babysit. Remind me later if you want to talk to T’Sara about physics. I will probably either be busy or in trouble for something, but I can set you up in off hours.” he looked at Mel. “Nice to meet you, don’t believe what your husband says about me.” He turned around and walked into the intake area.
“Attention sick people. Given the current circumstances we will be dealing with cases based on severity. Not first come, first served like usual. If the nursing staff will kindly locate the most gravely injured and direct them to a physician, those being myself, Dr Lemann, or Dr Yelchin, though he does appear to be taking a break to play Galaga.” the newly arrived Russian NE tossed a PaDD aside. “Dr Jarvis is currently in surgery, when he comes out, feel free to send every cut, scratch, and sniffle his way.”
-Dr Drake Marshall
OOC: The following takes place over a while. There are spaces for inserts if there’s other sickbay business. Linds, feel free to void if you had another plan.
IC:
“Doctor. Thank god.” Drake stared at the nurse for a moment. “No one ever says that to me. What’s wrong?”
“Doctor Lemann isn’t here, someone just came in, fell over a rail, two decks. L4-L6 Fracture and rupture. He needs a transplant… but we don’t have the facilities to do that right now.”
“Look in my files. There’s a synthetic nervous filament, get as much as you can. Deflect general medicine to Yelchin and find another doctor for the floor or ship some people upstairs.” She nodded “Yes doctor. He’ll be in suite 2.” She anticipated Drake’s question.
Breathing deeply, Drake scrubbed up for surgery. He hadn’t done this on a live patient before. As he snapped red surgical gloves into place, the Captain of his ER unit came back into his mind. “We don’t have time for if.” His motto.
Drake put his glasses on as he walked in. “Doctor Marshall. Spencer Reid, Science.”
“I don’t care who he is. Is he stable?”
“For now.”
“Exoscalpel.” And now the theoretical became extraordinarily real. Breathe. Think. Step 1: Clear the fractured bone. Once the incision was made and retractors set, he removed bone fragments, placing them in a tray. Some of them were only centimetres across, difficult to grab.
Step 2: Cut away damaged nerve tissue. Careful cuts and removals of small pieces of nerve on either side of the impact damage. Drake checked the clock. An hour and a half had gone by.
Step 3: Replace with artificial nerve. The longest portion of the surgery, as each piece was meticulously placed and sealed with a regenerator. Three and a half hours.
Step 4: Reconstruct the spinal bone. Difficult, but not time consuming. It was like repairing an inconveniently placed fracture. By the time all of it was set in place, four hours and twelve minutes.
After closing and exiting the OR, Drake moved around sickbay a little, gauging how things had gone in his absence. Yelchin was setting a concussion victim to bedrest.
