Melaia couldn’t help but chuckle. “Oh, this is hardly my first go-round in Sickbay, trust me.” She eyed Marshall. “Bet you didn’t know I was a Starfleet officer not all that long ago and had four pips to my name as well, did you? I’ve been battered, bruised and sent into surgery on more than one occasion. Some fractures aren’t nearly as dramatic as some of the stuff that I’ve had happen.”

Drake spun the tricorder around on the tray where it lay. The scan showing the spiral fracture appeared. “Had many spiral fractures Captain and before that scientist Reez?” He nodded at the PaDD with her chart on it. “I read.” Setting the bone knitter aside, its work complete, he retrieved a specialised soft tissue scanner. He knew tendons and ligaments would likely be damaged, but there was always the chance of something worse.

“Good to know,” Mel said with some amusement. “And nope, no spiral fractures. Nice to know I’m expanding my file.”

Somehow Cai seemed to be standing at Mel and Drake’s side. Watching with clear interest what was happening. He frowned at the tissue scanner. “Why’d your mom give you death glares?” He asked Mel as he watched.

Cai

“Don’t mind me. I’m just performing a medical procedure. Chat away.” Drake said.

“Keeping your patient occupied is always helpful,” Reez said idly before shifting her attention back to Cai.

Cai looked up at Drake and scowled however, he couldn’t help himself. “Does that sort of break hurt the blood vessels too? Would the deep tissue scanner repair them if it did?” He asked.

Cai

“Depends. Spiral fractures and distal radial fractures, there’s a chance that a jagged edge nicked a nerve or blood vessel. Thus the scanner. Interested in medicine?”

Cai shrugged. “Science in general, not specifically medicine. I prefer maths.” He said “What will you do if you find some damage?” He looked at Mel and then glanced back at where her family were waiting. “It was lucky your kids weren’t hurt.”

Cai

“Well, that depends on the extent of the damage. One small crimp in a nerve, a tiny cut in a blood vessel, I can handle it from the surface. But typically spiral fractures come from extreme strain. Twisting your arm too far, too hard. The more damage there is, the closer to the scalpel jockey it comes. I know a few people in science. Not on this ship, all over. I think T’Sara just took over the science dept at Starbase Magellan. She’s an astrophysicist. If you want to talk to someone about maths and science…”

“Yeah?” Cai asked looking mildly impressed.

Mel bit back something of an unnecessary comment to Marshall, but hey, she might be only recently back to work, but it wasn’t like all that knowledge had just magically flown out of her brain. Instead she replied to Cai. “Yes it was. Sabin just got more of a bath than intended and Julia was more scared than anything. Lucky for us, we work and live on e medical ship,” she said with a wink.

He couldn’t help it, maybe something about the motherly feeling he got from Mel, but he smiled. Just for a moment, but there it was. “Sure, lucky.” He said.

The fracture had in fact nicked a blood vessel and that was in part the source of the bruising, but it had been hiding a slight compression of a nerve that would need to be dealt with.

Cai looked up again from watching. “Anything. I like numbers, I like knowing how things work too so. Medicine is kinda just biological engineering really.” He smirked at Marshall.

After a few minutes standing talking with the adults, watching the repair work going on he reached up one hand and pushed his hood back, letting it fall backwards exposing his full electric blue haired head uncharacteristically.
