After “greeting” Dr Lemann, if one could indeed call it that, Drake had three hours in primary sickbay to kill. He was supposed to survey conditions. A couple patients. Being attended to by what can only be described as medical personnel. Everything seems in order. The one nurse who didn’t dread the appearance of Dr Drake Marshall came over. “Detention again?”
“Yep.”
“What did you do this time?”
“New doctor, Jarvis and I were both there-“
“Say no more, I don’t want to know.” Drake laughed. “Ok. Why is it that there is only one member of Medical staff who fears not the oncoming Marshall?”
“I get you doc, nobody else does. That’s what you wanted to hear, right?”
“Seriously.”
“They all think you’re just an arrogant jackass. I think you’re an arrogant jackass who earned it.”
“So how do I get it from active dislike to neutral avoidance?”
“Show them. Do your job to perfection instead of running around calling him ‘Jasper the Ripper.’”
“First; ‘Jasper the Ripper’ is funny. But there aren’t any surgeries to do around here. I never thought I’d miss the USS Hope, but I do. I was always busy. I can count on my hands the number of surgeries I’ve done since I got here. Not one of them has been a challenge, the Captain got all mama bear about her brother. I don’t know if I can keep doing this. ‘Jasper the Ripper’ is a distraction. I wanted out of the high intensity, Emergency Response world. But there, I meant something. Here… I spend more time in trouble than saving lives.”

“She’s a small ship, we don’t get assigned to the big missions. We build clinics on broken down planets.”
You build clinics. I get kicked off the damned planet because I was responding to an emergency like we did in Emergency Response. I was told I was in charge of ground medical. That means my word is law. We don’t have time to second guess my every decision. But apparently out here, that means I have to run everything by six people and then maybe get something done.”
“You pissed off someone who outranks you. I was there, it was ugly.”
“Yeah. A psychiatrist who went to med school 30 years ago and specialises in asking people what their mood is, he gets to throw me out, because he’s got the rank.”
“You’re not in ER anymore-“ Drake started to speak. “I’m not done. And you’re not on the USS Hope. This isn’t a place where you get glory. You don’t own the world because you’re the best at what you do.”
“I don’t want to own the world. I want a world that wants me. Used to be, I’d go into a surgical suite, and I was home. I don’t have that anymore. There’s one nurse who isn’t afraid to work with me. And the DRO doesn’t think I’m a liability yet.”
“I saw you two go into the holodeck together, you-“
“Stop. Speaking. Do you see everything I do?” She nodded. “I see all.”
“Ok Guru. Should I pack up and head into civilian practice?”

The nurse glared at Drake for an uncomfortable amount of time. “I’ve been here for five years and that may be the stupidest thing I have ever heard.”
“How do you really feel?”
“Seriously. You couldn’t live without Starfleet.”
“Ok. You know me better than I do? Where do I go?”
“Nowhere. You’re not a runner. You think Dr Walker is wrong about you, prove it. And stop calling him ‘Jasper the Ripper’ and get him in line.” Drake looked down. “I’ve got rounds to make.” She laughed a little. “I know that means I’m right.”
