“What do you hope to gain out of your posting on the Ogawa, other than procuring genuine tea leaves?” she queried, feeling just a touch more comfortable with the situation at hand. Really, it wasn’t much different than the qualitative interviews she had conducted at the Academy in conjunction with her research. She could do this. Her hands unfolded from where they had been tightly linked together and she placed them flat on the desk in front of her, resisting the urge to pick up something to fill them and twiddle with. That would make him nervous, she chastised herself.

Jasper resisted the temptation to say that his twice-weekly sessions with Counselor Pope had been becoming irksome; the man’s therapy had been going nowhere. Instead, he answered, “perhaps the opportunity to encounter new species, with markedly alien physiologies, will allow me to use my skills in a positive manner.”

Dr Jarvis then adjusted his spectacles in a manner that suggested he was altering the focus of a magnifying glass. “So how long have you been posted here on the Ogawa, Counselor?”

“That seems reasonable enough,” Ana responded, but then flushed slightly as she realized that she had actually said that out loud. She gave up on her attempts not to fidget and picked out one of the lollipops from her container, spinning it on the desk with her fingers as she pondered Jarvis’ attempt to put the focus on her. Not only was that not appropriate therapeutically, but there was very little that made her more uncomfortable than being the center of attention.

“Not very long,” she responded simply. “I just completed postdoctoral research at Starfleet Medical.” She winced slightly that she had continued with more details instead of leaving it just at her first statement. “What do you hope to get out of this appointment?” she quickly added, black eyes meeting his as she redirected the focus back to him.

From what she had just told him and given that she only looked about 30, Dr Jarvis suspected that this might be her first proper job ‘in the field’. He gave her a smile, “I suppose that makes the both of us new recruits as it were. Did you find it difficult adjusting to life aboard a starship?” He stared at the lollipop she had started fiddling with. “In regards to this appointment, I simply hope to be cleared for duty. I’ve spent too long sitting and talking about how I feel and would like to start working again immediately.”

“I haven’t been here very long,” Ana responded, spinning the lollipop nervously around her finger as she pondered how to answer the question. “There are a lot of people,” she finally added, and then felt a flash of annoyance as she realized that Jarvis had redirected the attention back onto her. Fortunately, before she could force it back to him, he answered her question and she nodded slowly. “Um, I see,” she responded, her voice faltering as she struggled to regain the confidence she’d previously had during the evaluation. She paused for a beat and then quickly segued, “what do you do in your off duty time to manage the stress of the medical profession?”

Dr Jarvis watched the lollipop Ana span between her fingers and listened to her words, ‘There are a lot of people’. An odd thing for a psychiatrist to say, he thought to himself. From his experience, her kind were usually quite the socialites. How interesting. “Do people make you feel uncomfortable, Counsellor?” he asked. It was a slight stretch and he did not expect her to answer him, at least not with her words.

He then answered the question that she had posed, “I do not find the medical profession to be stressful. When not practising I read articles related to my fields of interest, postulate new theories and techniques and attempt to hone my skills. In short, Counsellor, I enjoy my work. However, what I will say is that I am partial to the occasional game of chess.”
