Ember took pride in his cringe; it confirmed her tongue was not meant for French. “Sort of like an French dip with au jo, but fry-style?” She liked the sound of that, placing in an order, steak medium-rare (‘I’m not an animal!’ She would defend, when asked).

Once ordered, Sutalo glanced across the table. “Why did you choose a French bistro?” She asked, curiously. “Does France have sentimental value?”

“I’d never really thought about it before. It just seemed like a nice atmosphere. But the last vacation I took, when I found out I got into med school, I went to Paris. But that was almost 11 years ago.” He let his eyes speak for him as he drifted briefly back into memory. “So, do you have any significant locations? Favourite place back home?” He thought he was starting to understand Ember. Just a little.

“Have you ever gone back?” Kusinut followed the tale his eyes portrayed, their detailed speaking volumes his voice couldn’t reach. “I’ve never been much of a city person, really–they’re too crowded, too much going on for my liking. Don’t get me wrong, I love adventure, wouldn’t have joined Security if I didn’t.” She shook her head, enjoying a sip of water. “There’s this place in California, deep in the foothills outside ‘Francisco. Very quiet, serene. The city–humanity doesn’t touch it, no cars, no buildings–it’s so secluded that it doesn’t have a name, as far as I know. Anyways, I used to go there to get away from people’s BS, especially during exams. I guess there just come a time when you have to escape the world for a minute, you know?” She smiled a tad, “People can be draining.”

“I’ve been a senior surgeon for a while, and working Emergency Response, I use my R&R time to sleep. I don’t get a whole lot of leisure travel done. That was my last proper vacation.” He took in everything she said about California. “I understand that, the urge to get away from people, that’s why I just lock myself up for a week every year. Get some good rest.”

“That makes sense. Medicine is a lot harder a practice than the average Joe believes it to be. Hell! Anything in Starfleet’s is harder than most give us credit for.” She rolled her eyes. Vacation was a word of voodoo on ships like Ogawa. “I can’t say I blame you. A good week of seclusion is always good for the body..and the patience.”

“Okay, cliché question, but: What got you into medicine in the first place?”
