Sadie was ready for the final location on her ‘tour’ of the ship. Well, penultimate, she still needed to visit Science and check out her new office. But final in regards to arrival check-ins. The Medbay. It was a large medbay, full of people. Doctors rushed about, busy preparing the Ogawa for their next mission, ensuring the transfer of supplies from the Ferrite was complete, everything put in its proper place.

Eventually, someone noticed Sadie and stopped to ask if she needed assistance. “Yes, I’m here for my Boarding Physical. Lt Sadie, I’m the new CSO.”

The nurse nodded and led Sadie to a biobed. Then a woman who looked far too young to already be a Lt Cmdr walked over in her white medical uniform. “Lt. Cmdr Sadie. I am Dr. Kane. I will be performing your onboarding physical.” She pulled out her tricorder and opened, pullling out the hand scanner and began her scans. “Is there anything about your health that you would like to discuss?”

Sadie followed the nurse to the biobed and used the step-stool to get up, waiting patiently for the doctor to come over. “Good afternoon, Doctor,” Sadie said with a smile. “I’m in good health, as of my last physical, six months ago.” She tapped her fingers against the biobed surface, thinking, then rubbed her forehead. “Oh, there may be some hormonal imbalances as I’m old enough to enter my fourth phase. Oh, and my perscription for anxiety medication. I’ve had it approved by the counselor, but I’ll be coming to Sickbay to fill it regularly. It should be in my file.”

The scans came back, showing Sadie to be correct in her assessment. Typical readings, in most regions. There were two anomalies; increased levels of certain hormones the computer flagged as being associated with the ‘fourth phase’ in her race’s life cycle, and unusual bone growth on her skull, right where she had rubbed her forehead.

Alexis finished the scan. “Cmdr. have you recently had an injury or experienced any kind of physical trauma?”

“I don’t believe so, no.” Sadie shook her head. “Why?”

“You are showing a slight increase in hormones as you indicated, but what is concerning is you have some unusual bone growth here,” Kane pointed to the area that Sadie had rubbed.

Sadie lifted her hand and rubbed the spot again, feeling her skull. “Hmm… I hadn’t noticed, but now that I think about it, my forehead has been a little sore and itchy.”

Weird bumps on the forehead. Growth on her skull… Wait. She straightened suddenly, a small smile emerging on her face. “Oh! You said my hormone levels are elevated. I think I know. It’s my horns! Is the unusual bone growth on both sides of my forehead?” she tapped her head, symmetrically to where the unusual growth had been detected. “Not everyone gets horns, you know. It’s like… what’s a thing only some humans get… freckles? It’s like that. My mum didn’t grow any, but my dad did.”

“Yes it is on both sides. Are you having any discomfort, pain, itching, soreness?” Kane made a note to contact Sadie’s home planet about this.

“Yes, it itches a little, and is sensitive. I’d describe it as very similar to the early stages of a tooth growing in. I have read that the fur in that area will stop growing as all the blood vessels atrophy. Ideally the blood vessels atrophy fully before the horn breaks the skin.” Sadie explained, already mentally planning to tell write up a letter for her parents and brothers to tell them. It was exciting! Mum never had any horns, but her father had, so she always knew there was a chance she’d get them.

“I can give you a mild anti-inflammatory for the discomfort. I will contact the medical board on your home planet about this fourth phase and horn growth. If you have any further discomfort or do not feel well, they break through the skin, return immediately,” Kane instructed. “Do you have a physician at home you would prefer for me to contact directly?”
