Alexis preferred to spend her down time researching, in the lab, or some other intellectual activity. Well, at least she did before she met Solomon. He’d dragged her out of some of those habits. Sometimes he was worse than a dictator making sure she didn’t forget to sleep or eat.

Alexis really had no preference for ‘vacation’ spots, but Frigga loved the water. The hard working pup didn’t get to indulge often. So when they arrived at Gamma Tiltium, Alexis made plans to take Frigga to the beach. She packed a bag of water, food, treats, a towel, toys (with a special ball that would float in the water. She dressed in shorts, a tank top, and pulled her long hair into a ponytail. She clipped Frigga’s leash onto her collar and the small family of two humans and a canine made their way planetside for the day.

Kane was not typically a ‘beach’ kind of guy; but it had been years in this reality alone that he had been to one, so he agreed. Besides… Frigga was his second-favorite living thing. So of course he was going to go.

That made their way to the beach and picked a spot in the sand. The beach was slightly crowded, but not too bad. Kane helped Alexis get everything set up and then pulled off the pants he wore over his swimsuit. He then pulled off his shirt. It didn’t take long for the looks to start once his tattooed skin was open for glances.

Frigga could barely sit still as her humans set up they pointless items they had brought. Who needed things when there was All. That. Water! She whinned and wiggled until Alexis unclipped her leash and told her to “Go.” Frigga took off like a rocket right into the shallows of the ocean. The usually calm and dignified dog started attacking the tide as it rushed her and went out.

Alexis looked up from digging the floating tennis ball out of the bag and caught her breath at the site of her husband. He was smart and caring and the sexiest man she had ever laid eyes on. Her eyes traveled every tattoo across his body and then wandered into very non platonic thoughts about exploring each and every single one.

The corner of her eye caught movement, or really the cessation of movement and she turned her head to see a pair of women had stopped and were staring at Solomon in fascination and appreciation.

An absolutely unhappy look crossed her face. Into the ear piece Solomon heard Alexis mutter eloquent curses. “该死的风骚女郎可以让他们的眼睛盯着自己. (Gāisǐ de fēngsāo nǚláng kěyǐ ràng tāmen de yǎnjīng dīngzhe zìjǐ.).”

Then she threw his shirt at him. She didn’t like anyone else looking at him like that. It didn’t occur to her it would be extremely effective to just strip into her own bathing suit and join him. Her mind didn’t work that way.

Kane caught the shirt and gave his wife a quizzical look. When she grumbled about ‘coquettes’, he was momentarily lost; but then his eyes caught the looks and he shook his head and gave them his look. “Take a f^¢king picture. It’ll last longer.” The women looked shocked for moment, then offended. Kane laughed and looked at Alexis. “Most gorgeous and intelligent woman in this or any other universe as my wife and they think I’m gonna even blink at ‘em? Shiiiiitttt…” he said loudly and with a wicked grin.

She muttered something about they had better not take pictures. Then Alexis stared up at him, her head tipped just to the side, with that somewhat distant gaze that she got whenever something he said made her think, but more importantly feel. Her face flushed a light pink, but not from the sun. She blinked once after a moment returning his grin. She grabbed Frigga’s ball and stood.

She slipped out of her shorts and top revealing the semi-one piece bathing suit. Open down the back and along her ribs it showed every inch of her tattoos, most importantly the mobious strip along her ribs. She took the two steps toward him. “I won’t swim, but I’ll get in the shallows.”

Kane stared at his wife, his eyes travelling up and down her frame, for a long moment. No matter how many times he saw her, she was always the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. “You go get the dog and splash around. I’ll be there in a sec.” he said and then sat down and began to rummage through a gray satchel he had brought with him.

Her brows went up, but Alexis went. She called Frigga, who came running and leaping through the waves, looking like a rag mop come to life. She showed Frigga the ball and tossed it short distances a few times. Frigga wanted more of a challenge and barked at Alexis, and then her eyes falling on the Steak Keeper. She whined which made Alexis turn to look over her shoulder. He was sketching. Of course he was. Alexis grinned and looked back at Frigga. “You’ll have to make due with me. He’s busy.” Sketching for Solomon was a necessary as research was for her. It made him ‘unangry’ was how he put it. She threw the ball down the beach. It wasn’t like Solomon throwing it, but it appeased Frigga for the moment.

For the next few minutes, Kane held a sketch pad in one hand and stick of charcoal in the other, his fingers alternating between drawing and smudging lines with his finger tips. Soon enough though, he was done. He dropped the pad to the side and the packed the charcoal away and stood up, looking towards the water and where his wife and the dog were playing. He began walking down to the water; ignoring the stares his tattoos, wild hair, and multiple piercings drew from the more ‘refined’ guests of the resort. Behind him, the breeze fluttered the pages of the sketch pad, exposing a nude silhouette of Alexis’ back, tattoos clearly visible, as she looked back over her left shoulder.

He finished in just enough time to hear Alexis half yell/half squeal and then get the wind knocked out of her as she was pinned on her back to the sand. Frigga had found purchase in the hard packed wet sand and had launched herself at Alexis, landing them both in the wet sand. Frigga dropped her ball in favor of lots of kisses. “Friiiggaaaah, ugh ick, cough, sputter off, Frigga…” and then muffled laughter.

Kane smiled (inwardly, of course) and then snapped his fingers and said “Frigga! Ball! Bring it here!” and the dog bounced once on Alexis and then grabbed the ball and dashed to Kane. She dropped the ball at his feet and did three circles in rapt anticipation. Kane picked up the ball and showed it to her, drew back his arm and then sent it sailing down the beach; right on the line between the sand and the water. The dog bolted after it and Kane looked down at Alexis. He took her hand and helped her up, and then chuckled softly. “We gotta work on your anticipation skills, Lex.”

Alexis laughed with a little shrug as he pulled her up.. “Frigga’s happy. She doesn’t get to do this very often.” She was not going to admit to her husband that she had been distracted by doing calculations in her head about the gravitational force of celestial satellites and their effect on the tides of this particular beach. “I was quite proud of the fact I remembered how to fall correctly, the way you taught me.”

“You did good.” Kane said and then Frigga was back, the ball dropped at his feet. Kane picked it up and threw it back in the same direction and the dog took off like a quantum torpedo. “Wanna hit the water?” he asked.

Alexis wanted to do anything and everything with him. “Maybe a little. I don’t swim well. I never took the time to learn.”

“I can teach you. You have the build to be a good swimmer.” Kane said and he took her hand and began leading her to the water. “First thing to remember for right now is ‘Relax’. I’ve got you, and I won’t let anything happen to ya. Okay?”

“I know that,” Alexis said with a look that told him he was stating the obvious. “Do you think I would blindly follow you into the ocean if I didn’t know that?” It was a rhetorical question, asked as she followed the tug between their hands. “Besides you are an excellent teacher, and I am a very good student.” Her eyes traveled over him for a moment. “And there’s nothing more attractive than my husband who can teach me something new.”

“Keep it in your pants, Kane…” Solomon said. “And yeah, I think you would blindly follow me into the ocean. Because you know I’d never let anything happen to you.”

Alexis tilted her head at him. Was he talking to her or himself? He’d never called her ‘Kane’ (Mrs. Kane though), so she didn’t think so. But either possibility made her grin at him. Just as quickly her expression turned to exasperation tinged with confusion. “Isn’t that what I just said?” She couldn’t imagine she’d said something that Solomon didn’t understand, but perhaps she’d been to literal or technical?

He led her out into the water and, once they were up to Alexis’s waist, he said “Okay. Take a breath and go underwater. Hold it as long as you can.”

Alexis took two slow deep breath before holding it and then bending her knees, she dropped under the water. Her long blonde hair floated up in the water and fanned out around her. The water wasn’t deep, but to stay under, with the tide moving in and out, Alexis sat on the sandy bottom. She held her breath about 20 seconds before she came back up. She tipped her head back, to let the water pull her hair out of her face as she did.

Kane nodded and said “Okay, good. How was that?”

Alexis shrugged. “Fine. It’s not like in a pool where the water doesn’t really move. Staying still and under with the tide requires more concentration.”

Kane nodded in approval. He moved slightly, shifting so that he was facing away from the beach and her back was to the water. He looked her in the eyes and took her hands in his. “So now that you know what being underwater is like, it won’t be so scary the next time it happens. And swimming in the ocean, it will happen sometimes when you don’t expect it.” He smiled at her, a rare thing for him, and then he said “Don’t be mad.” and a large wave pulled them both towards it with its undertow and then crashed heavily on top of them.

It was a good thing Alexis’ brain moved at warp speeds. Otherwise she would have been so enthralled by that rare smile, she wouldn’t have had time to take a breath before the wave crashed over them and pulled them under. Just as the undertow grabbed them she sucked in a huge breath. Then the world was a roar of rushing water around her that turned to muted sounds and wild movement as the wave tugged them away from shore. Alexis’ hands held on tightly to Solomon’s, and she opened her eyes under the water and looked around.

Kane’s grip on her hand was steady, and when she opened her eyes, she saw him in front of her. His feet had dug into the sand and he was using that as an anchor while the current tugged and pulled at them. He pointed up with his free hand and bent his legs at the knee and then pushed off the sandy bottom and pulled her along to the surface. As they broke the boundary between water and air, Kane pulled Alexis to him and they floated now that they were past the breakers. “You okay?” he asked.

Alexis wrapped her arms around his shoulder and drew in deep breaths. She nodded. “I’m okay.” She turned to look around her. Her eyes landed on the beach, which was much further away than she expected. They hadn’t been under the water that long. They weren’t in the middle of the ocean, but it was fascinating how far they had been pulled, when the tide constantly washed ashore. The current was strong here, but not as chaotic as the push and pull right beside the shore.

“The trick to swimming in the ocean-” Kane said as the drifted lazily in the water, “- is not to fight the current. Shorelines are kinda the same all over. The currents and tides will pull away from the beach, maybe further than you want or are comfortable with… but eventually they’ll send you back, too. You just need to move parallel to the shoreline.”

Alexis began to tread water slowly. She was fit, ran regularly, but she wasn’t a strong swimmer. This was evident as she let go to read water and the waves pulled and tugged and dunked her under more than once and increased the space between them. “What if it takes you out too far before it brings you back?”

Kane shrugged. “Try not to panic and conserve your energy.” he said. “Drift slowly and swim towards shore in small durations.” and then he smiled at her as he moved back closer to her. “And call me. You know I’ll find you… no matter what.”

Alexis rolled her eyes with exasperation. “I know that. I haven’t forgotten.” Her hands rested on his fore arms. “Even if my mind didn’t have a larger capacity and better processing speed than the Ogawa you remind me frequently enough to make sure I don’t forget.” She smiled and drifted closer long enough to kiss him briefly.

He kissed her back and chuckled. “Of course I do. You consistently forget to eat, you go hours without drinking anything, and let’s not forget the time you were so engrossed in whatever you were reading that you almost walked out of our quarters without any pants on. Yeah, I know you are super smart, Lex. But you also know that you get tunnel vision more than a Decalian Boring Drill.” and he laughed.

Alexis looked offended, but she also knew Solomon was right. He was the only one who could distract her and slow her mind down. “Yes, but if I was lost in the ocean or caught in the current do you really think I would be thinking about anything other than contacting you?”

“You damn well better be. If that’s the situation, I want to put all that brain energy into staying alive so you come back to me.” He pushed away from her a little bit and slicked his hair back on his head so he was looking directly at her. “I mean it. If you are really in the s#!t, don’t think about me. Think about how to get out of the s#!t and back to me. Promise?”

Alexis shook her head. “I can promise I will do everything to get back to you, but I won’t promise not to think about you.” Her head tipped to the side, the way it did when she was putting her thoughts in order. “I have to think about you. You are the only person I know who can find a solution to anything.”

Kane shook his head. “No, not anything. But if I can’t find one, I can blow up the problem. So at least there’s that.” He kissed her cheek and then said “Ok, back to the beach.” He let go of her and let the water drift him away from her.
