Calder stood in the Secondary Sickbay still wearing his VF-511 Fleet Angels flight suit, the medical crosses and pouches marking him unmistakably as a Marine combat medic rather than what he technically was—a Starfleet Security officer temporarily embedded with the 7th Marine Expeditionary Unit, the Iron Valkyries. He was accustomed to checking in with a flight surgeon while still suited up, and in the haze of transfer and emotional exhaustion it hadn’t occurred to him to change before reporting; the gear felt like armor he hadn’t yet learned how to take off.

A woman in medical white and a lab coat approached out of the back. She was young for the Lt Cmdr pips on her collar. She was young to be anything other than an ensign. She had blonde hair pulled into a low but thick bun, indicating her hair was quite long. Her brown eyes travelled over him in a clinical manner. New face, marine flight suit, medical insignia. This must be the new security officer who’s medical file arrived a few days ago. Coming from the Chimera. “Lt Calder, this way please. I’m Cmdr Alexis Kane. I’ll be doing your onboarding physical.” She pointed to a bilobed, flipped open a tricorder and removed the small hand scanner.

Calder straightened slightly as she approached, instinctively squaring his shoulders despite the fatigue still sitting heavy in his limbs, and gave her a crisp nod that was more Marine habit than Starfleet formality. “Aye, Commander,” he said evenly, his voice steady and professional as his eyes flicked briefly to the diagnostic bed before returning to her face. He stepped where indicated without comment, the flight suit creaking faintly as he moved, then added after a beat, almost apologetic, “Apologies mam, didn’t think to change, habit from flight line check-ins,” trying to explain the armor he hadn’t yet shed. His body fat was low but within safe levels, the intensity of marine physical training, and exercise had put him in the best shape of his life. The scan were clean, old wounds, fractures, and breaks related to old stories and lives saved.

“Do not apologize,” she said dismissively as she stared at the readings on her tricorder. “It shows efficiency. We are a medical ship, as such we really need everyone to report first thing to make sure our patients that are compromised are not out at risk. Have you been in any areas outside the Federation in the last year?”
