The corridor outside the executive office was quiet, save for the occasional footfall from bridge personnel passing behind her.

Dev stood alone before the sealed door, hands clasped loosely behind her back, posture crisp. She could hear the muted hum of the Ogawa’s systems—an ever-present lullaby of warp field harmonics and environmental control. Familiar. Comforting, in its way.

She took a slow breath. Not out of anxiety—but precision. She wanted to be clear, concise, present. First impressions with an XO tended to shape the tone of an entire tour.

Dev stepped forward and pressed the door chime.

A soft tone rang out—just one—and she waited, expression composed, chin slightly lifted, ready to be summoned in.

A part of her—distant, buried under layers of training—remembered the first time she’d stood outside an office like this, fresh from the Academy, fists clenched too tightly behind her back. Now, the tension had long since worn into habit. Not fear. Just form.

She waited. Still.

The door slid open silently and revealed the office beyond. It was a larger area domi ated by a desk in the far right corner. Two chairs were set facing the desk, and the desk and chair area were set a bit away from a seating area in the middle of the room with two sofas and two more comfortable looking chairs. The sofas were facing one another on opposite sides of a low table; while the chairs faced each other at opposing ends. The far left wall was taken up by a multitude of floating shelves; each home to pictures, mementos, actual books, and more than a few models of ships of various kinds and sizes. The models ranged from ancient sailing vessels to modern starships, and all seemed to be made of wood.

Seated at the desk was a large human male. Dressed in the red uniform of command and with Commander pips on his collar, the figure was imposing even sitting down. Broad shoulders seemed to anchor a large chest and muscular arms; and bright blonde hair- cut in the manner of the Star Fleet Marines- shaded bright blue eyes that looked up as the door opened. His face was considered handsome by many, but it was his smile that dominated the look. It was genuine, warm, and kind.

As he saw the new arrival, he stood up… and up some more. He was tall for a human, and standing seemed built more like an Orion. “Hello. Come in, please.” he said and held out his hand to the new arrival. “I’m Commander Sinclair. You must be Lieutenant Commander Dev?” He voice was heavy with a Scottish accent

Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO

Dev stepped inside as the doors whispered shut behind her, the ambient hush of the corridor replaced by the quiet gravity of a senior officer’s domain.

The room was warm—visually, at least. Lived-in, personal. The models lining the shelves caught her attention for only a moment: craftsmanship, intention, history. All catalogued in a glance.

She turned her focus to the man himself.

Commander Sinclair rose to his full height—impressive by any measure—and extended a hand. The gesture was open, direct. Disarming, even. Dev accepted it with practiced ease.

“Lieutenant Commander Dev Siobhan,” she confirmed. Her grip was firm, professional. “Reporting for duty as ordered.”

“Good to have you aboard.” Sinclair said and gestured to one of the chairs before taking his seat.

She released his hand and straightened slightly.

“Thank you for seeing me, Commander. I’ve reviewed the ship’s layout and initial science logs. The facilities are well-appointed, and my department appears to be in capable hands. I’m ready to integrate fully as soon as you deem appropriate.”

Her tone was composed, precise—but not cold. This was, after all, the beginning of something. And while she didn’t yet know what kind of man Royal Sinclair was beyond his file and his handshake, she was willing to meet professionalism with the same.

“Excellent.” the XO said. “But as much as I assume you are ready to get to work, I’d like to get to know you a bit. Please be seated. Would you care for something to drink?”

Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO

Dev inclined her head in a small nod of thanks and moved to take the offered seat, posture settling into an easy but attentive alignment.

“A drink would be welcome, thank you,” she replied. “Bajoran kava tea, hot. Strong enough to stand a spoon in, as they say back home.”

“Aye.” Sinclair said with a grin. “Strong enough to curdle powdered milk, that’s how my Grandpa liked his.” He stood and went to the replicator; ordering the drink and then a glass of something called ‘Irn-Bru’, which turned out to a bright orange liquid of some kind before he came back and set the drinks on the desk and took his seat.

There was the faintest lift at one corner of her mouth—enough to hint at warmth beneath her otherwise composed tone. “It’s been a long day of transitions, and that’s a good way to keep both my hands and my thoughts occupied while we talk.”

She rested her hands lightly on the armrests, gaze returning to Sinclair. “I agree with you, Commander—there’s work to be done, but knowing the people you work beside is just as important.”

“And while this is one of the biggest medical ships in all of Star Fleet, we do lean a bit more strongly to the team and community attitudes than even smaller vessels.” Sinclair said. “The nature of our missions tend to exact a lot of emotional investment. Does that concern you at all?”
