Dev stood before the doors to the psychiatry suite, her reflection caught in the polished wall panel opposite: uniform crisp, expression unreadable, eyes just a shade too sharp for rest.

She’d taken the long route here—literally. A deliberate pass by environmental control, a short detour past the secondary lab cluster. Nothing suspicious. Just movement. Just breath.

The doors slid open with a sigh.

She stepped inside.

“Lieutenant Commander Dev Siobhan, reporting for my initial evaluation,” she stated aloud, evenly.

Her voice held no hesitation, but no eagerness either. She had learned, long ago, how to pass a psych screen without lying—by choosing what not to say.

Behind her back, her thumb rubbed once against her opposite knuckle.

It wasn’t nerves. Not quite.

This wasn’t her first ship. Not her first psych eval. But something about this room—this ship, maybe—felt different. Not heavier. Just… quieter.

She glanced toward the closed office doors beyond reception.

Whatever they needed to ask, she would answer. What she could.

Mariah was standing at reception desk reviewing her notes from the previous appointment when she heard the doors to the suite open. She didn’t pay much attention as comings and goings were common, but when she heard a voice announce her arrival for a psych eval, Grayson naturally looked up and faced the woman with a polite smile. “Welcome, Commander. I’m Dr. Mariah Grayson, and you’ll be meeting with me today. Care to follow me back to my office?” Grayson handed the PADD she’d been reviewing back to the yeoman with a nod of thanks.
