USS Ogawa

Coming Aboard - Transporter Room 1

The shimmer of the transporter faded, and with it, the last of Dev’s hesitation.

She stood still for a moment longer than necessary, letting the hum of the pad settle in her bones. There was always something faintly disorienting about transport—molecular cohesion undone and redrawn. She wondered, briefly, if that was how change felt. Not all at once, but in a quiet, humming realignment.

“Welcome aboard, Commander,” said the ensign at the controls, posture crisp.

Dev offered a nod—polite, professional. “Thank you. Permission to come aboard?”

“Granted, sir. Your orders have been received. The captain asked that you report to the bridge when you’re ready.”

When you’re ready. As if readiness was a destination.

She stepped off the pad and adjusted the strap of the satchel slung over her shoulder. Just the essentials: a padd, a dataport reader, a pressed uniform sealed in a garment roll, and a small hydroponic starter kit tucked quietly beneath it all.

The corridor outside smelled faintly of sterilized metal and fresh polish—standard on a medical cruiser. Clean. Sharp. She liked that.

She had studied the schematics of the Ogawa before departure. Nightingale-class: designed for mercy, not firepower. Bristling with medical bays, isolation wards, research labs. A ship meant to heal.

It was a good match.

Dev paused before the nearest wall console and tapped in her credentials. Her name flickered into view, assigned to the senior staff manifest.
Dev Siobhan. Lieutenant Commander. Chief Science Officer.

There it was, in Federation standard. A new post. A new beginning.

She allowed herself a slow breath.

You asked for this, she reminded herself. No ghosts, no legends—just the work. Let that be enough.

The corridor curved gently ahead, bathed in soft blue lighting. Somewhere down it, the bridge waited. New crewmates. New expectations. Maybe, in time, a place she could belong to again.

Dev straightened her spine, brushed a stray red hair back into place, and walked forward.
