Dira felt heat on her cheeks, but she also beamed at Zoi. They had mostly been fairly discreet when it came to PDA, but this was not a normal scenario, nor was she hiding her relationship. After all, it was not lost on any of the people present that Dira bringing a romantic partner with her was a rather significant event, nor was Zoi’s declaration (including the assertion of a future) missed. “Good thing I feel the same way,” she declared, keeping her hand in Zoi’s.
Ruana smiled, gazing rather intently at Dira and Zoi. Dira turned her head and quirked her brows. “Aloud, Grandmother, please,” she said, unable to keep the smirk off her face.
The elderly Betazoid chuckled. “Fine, fine. I just said it’s so nice to see you happy again, Dira.”
“It feels good to be happy again,” Dira said, gazing at Zoi with open admiration and affection. Kesren winked at her.
Zoi laughed and blushed herself, a rare occurrence for the steadfast Chief of Security. Her hand felt right in Dira’s. A part of her relished in the idea that here, they could be as open and affectionate as they liked. Neither had to worry about their positions within the ship or how their relationship was perceived here. They didn’t have to worry about losing respect or being seen less larger than life; something that was necessary on board their ship and a significant reason why they were careful about their interactions in public.
“Ahhh! When did we all get so mushy?” Sesara said, laughing openly as she moved to the kitchen. “Come, let’s get the tables on the patio set. The caterer will be here shortly with dinner, because goodness knows I wasn’t cooking for everyone today.”
Dira smiled and stepped backwards towards the kitchen, pulling Zoi with her. She slowed her step slightly so that Zoi drew close enough so she could whisper. “I’m so glad you’re here with me. I can’t imagine it being otherwise.” It certainly didn’t hurt that she was still feeling a bit giddy over their decision to move in together.

Zoi returned her smile and allowed herself to be pulled close to Dira. “I could imagine it, but I daresay there is way less pressure for you to be happy from their worries when you are happy and they see it.” She moved even closer and captured Dira’s lips with her own. The kiss was not gentle. It was demanding and seeking as she backed Dira through a door to what turned out to be a pantry and closed the door with her foot.

Surprised by Zoi’s rather emboldened move, Dira grinned beneath their kiss. She pulled Zoi in closer, letting the momentary privacy fuel her need to match her beloved’s intensity.
When they finally broke the kiss, Dira was momentarily overwhelmed, but in the best possible way. “Well then,” she said with a laugh. “I think I’m not opposed to you taking charge more often, Love. But I’m going to try very hard to tamp down the ideas it’s giving me, given that there are telepaths out there, one of whom is my mother and doesn’t need to know what carnal thoughts are going through her daughter’s mind just now.”

Zoi’s brow rose in challenge. “Dearest, I thought you were long experienced at hiding your emotions and thoughts from others when necessary. I believe now is probably one of those times, don’t you?” She laughed, kissed Dira soundly on the mouth and then walked backwards out of the pantry. The challenge on her face was clear even if she was closed off from exuding her feelings outwardly to the party.
This day was not about her and Dira, though the fact they had chosen to move in with each other this day made it special in her mind anyway. They would have plenty of time this trip to revel in their love for one another, a fact she was truly starting to understand. In comparison to time on the Ogawa, they were practically unguarded in their affection towards one another here. Plus, the atmosphere of love that surrounded a wedding allowed them to be unabashedly in love with each other, a fact she was fully going to take advantage of.

If only it were that easy! The issue that made it hard for her to filter everyone else out also made it sometimes harder to stop others from getting in. Though, in general she was better at blocking out strangers. The situation got far more dicey when it was people she was close to, like her parents. With a slight sigh, Dira slipped out of the pantry and adopted an air of nonchalance.
The caterers were arriving just then and soon the kitchen was a buzz of activity as they unpacked the food and set it out on the large island. There were all sorts of traditional Betazoid and Denobulan dishes, plus a couple fusion-style items from Vega where colonists had cobbled together their homeworld favourites using the closest equivalent of native ingredients.
Sesara clapped her hands. “Alright, food is here and we don’t need to stand on to much ceremony. We’re serving from the kitchen and eating on the patio.” She leaned over to Ruana. “Mother, you go on out and I’ll bring you a plate.”
“And shall I fix you one my Love” Redar said, grinning widely as he kissed Sesara’s cheek.
“Yes, please,” she said.
Dira just grinned as she joined the small gathering near the island that was amounting to a line up and was standing next to Zoi, with Redar’s other spouse Aleen. The red-head turned and beamed at the couple. “I just love weddings, don’t you?”
“Oh, I definitely do,” Dira said. “Though this is the first in awhile that I’ve attended that wasn’t on my of my ships.”
“You can marry people, as a captain, can’t you?” Aleen said.
She grinned. “Yes, I can. In fact, I was able to do so not long after I was promoted. It’s always one of the more lovely duties. Makes up for all the reports… almost,” Dira said with a laugh.

“Nothing makes up for reports, but we can certainly try. I do wonder who officiates for the Captain. I need to know for.... a friend.” Zoi said with a grin.

She shouldn’t have been so surprised by the question, but it caught her off guard and Dira felt heat touch her cheeks. She arched her brows at Zoi before adding a colourful salad to her plate. “Well, it depends on who is available and where that particular captain is. There’s nothing requiring someone from Starfleet to marry them, so it could very well be a civilian service with someone who can legally marry them. But if you do have an officer marry you, said captain can have anyone captain-ranked or higher. Could be a friend, or simply the commander of you fleet, most likely some admiral at you felt base.” Dira shrugged. “It varies.”
Aleen did not miss the subtext and grinned one of those extra-wide Denobulan smiles. “Oh, well that sounds very accommodating. The perfect flexible situation. My, I could see people eloping that way very easily, and”-she leaned in towards Dira with a conspiratorial smile-“I might be new to new to the family but I suspect a certain bride would be rather miffed about elopement, especially given she waited so long so her own daughter could join her for such a special occasion.”
Dira snorted. “I would never dream of depriving her of that event. She’d never forgive me.” She was only partly joking as well.
Aleena winked at the pair and sauntered off with her plate, leaving Dira there filling hers and shaking her head. She leaned towards Zoi and whispered, “Cheeky. You’re just trying to get me into trouble, aren’t you?”
Zoi laughed aloud and simply gave Dira that challenging look she had earlier. Though marriage between them was not immediately a concern, she didn’t mind talking about it a little in this company for this particular occasion. IT seemed natural and easy without pressure.
The patio was awash in golden light from the setting sun, enhanced by the small clear votive holders that illuminated the table. Small lightly scented floral arrangements were scattered amongst the candles on the two rectangle tables that had been pushed together to form one large square. Everyone could see each other and it was easy to talk to across should someone wish to. Braziers flanked the patio, keeping the incoming chill off the guests, allowing the dinner to go as long as people wished.
There were toasts (Dira’s was not tonight), and her father made people laugh with the quirky anecdotes of his ex-wife. She once again marvelled at the warm relationship that existed between her parents. It was not common and she cherished it.
As people mingled after the meal was done, Aleen and Dira’s grandmother made their exits and Dira’s cousins soon after, leaving her parents, her and Zoi, and Redar.
Redar pulled a chair over to Dira and Zoi. “So what sort of miracle had to be concocted in order to make all this work out? The way your mother spoke of it, it sounded like you’d never get away.”
Dira chuckled. “Just… timing. It’s hard for a captain, let alone two senior officers, to get away sometimes. But I was long overdue for a proper R&R.”
He chuckled. “You do realize she wasn’t ever getting married without you, right? She worries about you my dear.”
“I know,” Dira said.
“At least there’s someone there looking out for you now,” Redar said, tossing Zoi a wink.

Zoi grinned and tipped her glass towards Redar in a small salute. “And I shall endeavor to do my best on behalf of Sesara. Dira does make it fairly easy though. She takes care of herself most of the time. I don’t think either of us expected to find love on the Ogawa, but Dira.... she is special and it seemed so very right to have my hand in hers.”
