OOC: I’ll be LOAing for a bit over a week but wanted to get a thread started before I left where people can swing by and pester the CSO while he struggles with catching up on basic admin. Feel free to throw in a reply and I’ll get back to you when I return.Achilleas sat at his desk and looked at the proverbial mountain of paperwork that needed his reading, rubber stamping, rejections, compromising, and passing up the chain. The ship was in a right state recently and that unfortunately meant the majority of experiments were either interrupted or outright destroyed. That also included a lot of the equipment and materials needed to start those experiments up again.
With a heavy sigh he picked up the first random PaDD and began reading a request to replenish the horticulturists with a relatively rare Denebian purple rose specimen. The experiment and subsequent disruption destroyed the last one and a replacement was needed to see if propagating it was possible to some random human colony.
CSO Petrakos
The chime sounded at his door.
Cori was finally on full-duty, but she had been floating about the department and liaising with the medical department. For the moment she was happy to just be around everything and give herself time to figure out what she wanted to do with her new life, but she was also aware that it was time to perhaps take the next step.
~Corinne Dalton
“Come on in.”Achilleas called out from behind his desk. He placed the PaDD he was working on down and was glad for an interruption.
CSO Petrakos
Cori stepped in, PADD in hand and gave him a small smile. “Heya, Chief. How’re you feeling?”
She held out the PADD. “Biosci department report. I offered to being it over for Lt. Chen since I had to come and see you anyway.”
~Corinne Dalton
Achilleas returned the smile but with a hint of tiredness to it. He took the PaDD from Corinne then motioned to a seat.
“I’m doing alright thanks. Just…” He motioned to the rest of the PaDDs on his desk. “So much stuff to catch up on.”
“I can imagine,” Cori said, slipping into a chair.
He chuckled wryly as he thought of Starfleet’s recruitment slogan of seeing the galaxy. Galaxy filled with paperwork. “So what can I help you with Lieutenant?”
CSO Petrakos
“So, I’ve been floating about the sub-departments for a little while now that I’m cleared for duty, but I still don’t really quite have a place to be. Bioscience is definitely an interest and with the medical knowledge I picked up, I can liaise between the departments, but I still don’t have a direction yet.” Cori drew in a deep breath and let it out. “I need a direction so I don’t get, well, bored.”
~Corinne Dalton
Achilleas leaned back in his chair and studied Corinne for a moment. “A science department on a medical ship is going to be boring a lot of the time. When the ship needs us is when it gets very exciting and often not in a good way.” He grinned a bit at that. “Now I can help point you in a direction but the biggest question you need to answer is what interests you? Any old random direction is just as likely to bore you if you’ve got no interest in the subject.”
CSO Petrakos
Cori sucked in a breath and sighed it out. “That’s the problem. I was in direct link with a ship’s computer, including the Federation database. In a nanosecond, the entire galaxy was, in a way, at my mental fingertips. Now, when I was holographic, I could help out in Sickbay, like a medic. I don’t have all the knowledge now that I could access before, but I didn’t lose all either.”
She leaned back in her chair. “I’m not going to have a career like others anymore, I don’t think. I just don’t know what that means or looks like. Kane said he’d let me when he reached the next stage on a project he’s working on, but that’s more of a curiosity thing right now. It’s not something to keep me busy.”
~Corinne Dalton
Achilleas tapped a finger against his armrest as he thought. “Well…” He began to muse aloud. “The great thing about the galaxy is that we only really know a fraction of what’s out there. As extensive as the Federation’s database is, it is only the documented experiences of what has been discovered so far.”
He look more closely at Corrine and grinned. “Besides, there’s a huge difference between knowing something and personally experiencing it. I assume that you’re aware of when the Ogawa crew was on leave at starbase 157 as we waited for a new ship. Likely the records stated how everyone on the starbase was affected by a mold colony that had us acting like we were in Alice in Wonderland. Perhaps there was even footage archived so it could be reviewed. However… that could only provide a glimpse of what it was like for those of us who experienced it.”
“So perhaps we’re both coming at this from the wrong angle. Instead of asking what would you like to do, I think instead we need to ask what do you want to experience?” He offered an alternative.
CSO Petrakos
Cori sat a little straighter, leaning forward enough to rest her arm on the desk. Her vivid blue eyes seemed electric for a moment before she broke into a smile. “Everything. I want to experience everything. I’ve already experienced the death of my body before I got to really do much in life. And I’ll live pretty much the typical lifespan I was going. I’ve lost a lot of time and I don’t want to waste any more.” Royal was helping her to remember the tiny little experiences she could have now, but maybe it was time to think on a grander scale.
“But everything is a bit overwhelming to consider. Where exactly does a person start” she said with a laugh before she promptly stopped and gave him the side eye. “Assuming you were joking about getting myself infected with something, of course.”
~Corinne Dalton
Achilleas couldn’t help but laugh at Corrine’s side-eyed comment. “I don’t recommend doing that just because you can, no. And yes it would be overwhelming to start from an “everything” scope on what you’d want to experience. So here’s your homework then because I can only point you in a direction. In the scope of what this department can do, and there is a tad of wiggle room since we do work with medical on some things, come up with a list of ten things you’d like to experience, then refine it to five, then to three and come see me with those three and we’ll go from there.”
CSO Petrakos
Cori sucked in a breath and nodded. “A very practical and reasonable approach.” There was something in all of this that felt familiar, like an echo of her life before. Was it as simple as being open to being adventurous again? She could now, within reason. The Kanes would never forgive her for going out of her way to harm her new body, but there was a ton of room between that and where she was right now.
Cori rose to her feet and snapped off a cheeky salute with a smirk. “Then I better get to it. It’s an awful lot of considering to get to.”
~Corinne Dalton
Achilleas smiled and waved in response to the salute. “Trying to set the course to one’s new life is bound to have a ton of reflection. Good luck with that.”
CSO Petrakos
Cori chuckled. “Isn’t that the truth.”
“Alright, off I go. Thanks, Chief,” she said, flashing him a smile before she all bu floated out the door.
