John had just finished his tour of the ship with Brad and decided he would check in with the Dr Grayson. He was in the area anyway and ticked off one extra thing he had to do. He made his way to the the Counsellor’s office, nodding to the crew he passed on the way and smiling warmly. He was trying to make a good impression on anyone he met. Being the Head Nurse was an important job and it was even more important to have a good rapport with the crew- as well as his juniors. He eventually made it to Dr Grayson’s Office, pressed the chime and walked in when called.

“Come in,” Mariah called out, the doors automatically opening to admit her visitor. Reception had already notified her that Lieutenant McCandless had decided to stop by for his boarding evaluation, and thankfully, Grayson was free and simply working on notes. It was important to her to make herself available to anyone who needed her, but especially members of the medical staff who sometimes wanted to collaborate on the care of specific patients or just needed some emotional support after an unexpected events with a patient or member of staff. Working aboard a medical meant happiness and tragedy often went hand-in-hand.

Grayson stood and approached the door, offering her hand and a smile. “Hello. I’m Doctor Mariah Grayson. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

John entered the room when called and smiled back to Doctor Grayson. He hadn’t really been looking forward to this if he was being honest with himself. He had never really felt the need for Counselling throughout his life. But he was happy to check it off as a necessary evil. John reached forward and shook Mariah’s hand, he had a firm grip but not enough to be uncomfortable.
“John McCandless. Its good to meet you Doctor Grayson.” He replied.
“They’ve probably already prompted you but I’m here for my boarding evaluation. I’ve just finished my tour with Commander Walker and thought I’d pop on by.” He stated.

Mariah nodded. “The administrative yeoman on duty explained as much. That’s not a problem at all. I appreciate your promptness and adherence to protocol. We medical types tend to at least consider neglecting ourselves in favor of taking care of others, but it’s important to set a good example and to invest in ourselves.” She stepped back and gestured for him to take his seat anywhere he liked. “May I get you something from the replicator?”

John smiled.
“Oh that’s good. I’m glad you had warning of me coming. I agree, we often think about others. I like to say, look after yourself so that you can best look after others.” He replied.
“Thank you, I’ll have a glass of water please.” He stated and sat down on the sofa.

It didn’t take Mariah long to fulfill his simple request, and as she handed him the glass, she offered, “I like to say something similar.” She sat across from John and added, “I like to treat these boarding evaluations more like get to know you sessions rather than cool and calculated assessments, per se. Naturally, feel free to bring up anything that’s on your mind. With the exception of anything that might pose a danger to yourself or the crew, anything discussed here will be kept in strict confidence. At the very least, I like to make sure the crew knows who I am, so if there was ever anything they were struggling with, they’d at least know one person they could come to.”

John listened and took the glass, taking a sip.
“I appreciate that. Don’t worry, I don’t anything dangerous has really ever happened to me so you’re all good.” He replied with a smile.
“I agree though, it is important to get to know the people you may have to help someday. Is there anything in particular you would like to know about me?” He asked.
