Koria stopped in front of the door and took a deep breath. She had always been much more comfortable around machines then with people, at least machines it was easy to tell when there was something wrong. But she had slowly come to accept that while she did get to work on these amazing ships, and mostly get to work with people who also appreciated the amazing engineering that went into them, a part of her job these days involved interacting with other people. Such as the Captain.Closing her eyes for a second she took one more calming breath. As she reached over to tap the chime, she silently cursed herself for not actually bothering to check and see if the Captain was here. But her finger had a mind of its own, landing on the button and there was no turning back now.
Lt Sutret - CE
“Come in.”
An office space said something about the occupant and Dira’s was no different. To the right of the entrance was the captain’s desk, a couple chairs for guests, and a replicator tucked into the corner, while a sitting area took up the space in front of the an expanse of windows opposite the main door. The sitting area comprised of a navy blue sofa that had a gentle curve to it. On each side of it, nestled between the windows and where it curved out was a side table with a potted plant. One had trails of forked leaves and the other had tall dark green stems lined with alternating heart shaped leaves that had a blue hue.
Other small touches had been added that were Dira’s, though only a few so far. Aside from the plants, there was a round and squat pot in a deep blue colour with sweeps of white and green paint. It sat on the shelf behind the desk, along with a picture of an older brown skinned woman with a heart shape face, natural black kinky curls not unlike Dira’s, and the dark eyes of a Betazoid. On the other side of the pot was a brown skinned Haliian man with a greying moustache, short dark hair and a receding hairline that made his forehead ridges and bulges more prominent.
Her dark eyes gazed at the newcomer and Dira smiled, gesturing to one of the chairs at her desk. “Ahh, if I’m not mistaken, you’re my new Chief Engineer, yes?”
Captain Myqian, CO
“Yes Captain. Lieutenant Koria Sutret reporting for duty,” she said as she walked into the office. Looking down at the proffered chair she slid into it, sitting up right, her back straight. “It’s a pleasure being here Captain.”
Koria silently congratulated herself, that sound almost normal.
Lt Sutret - CE
Dira smiled knowingly. “Relax, Lieutenant, I don’t bite. Can I grab you something from the replicator? It’s about time I took a break and I could use something myself.”
Captain Myqian, CO
“No thank you Captain,” Koria said shifting in the chair, hopefully making it seem like she had ‘relaxed’.
“Uh, but please don’t stop yourself on my account.”
Lt Sutret - CE
Myqian flashed a grin. “Oh, I won’t, don’t you worry,” she said, rising gracefully from her chair. She was of a pretty average height for a Humanoid woman and moved with an ease etched into every muscle.
Returning to her chair, steaming mug in hand, Dira took a sip and leaned back in her seat. “So, an assignment on a medical ship. Is that good thing, neutral, or feels like a punishment? Other responses are allowed, but I’m curious and prefer honesty.” There was a glimmer in her irisless eyes.”
Captain Myqian, CO
Koria tapped her finger on her leg as she thought about it for a moment. “On one hand, it is nice to get back into space. And in my experience the only people who break stuff more then doctors are scientists. So it’ll be a nice challenge to keep things running smoothly. You also don’t typically send a medical ship into the middle of a firefight, so hopefully that means less chance of someone blowing a hole in the ship, right?
A smile tugged at the corners of Dira’s lips.
“But on the flipside, my experience is that doctors are some of the worst patients. They break things, and instead of telling you that something is wrong, they end up making it worse by trying to fix it themselves. So instead of just having to fix the scanner on a biobed, somehow they’ve shut down the warp core…”
Koria trailed off for a second as she thought about it. After a moment her mind finally caught up with her mouth and it clicked what she said. “Uh, no offense intended of course Captain. I guess… I guess I’d have to say probably neutral, at least until the first thing gets broken.”
Lt Sutret - CE
Myqian laughed and shook her head. “First, you’re not wrong. People break things around here all the time. And second, while you’re right that we don’t go into firefights, we’ve had enough interesting things go down, or complicated missions that you might be surprised how busy you’ll be sometimes.”
Captain Myqian, CO
Koria rubbed her forehead. Hopefully she hadn’t gotten herself in over her head. “What kind of interesting things?”
Lt Sutret - CE
Dira made a show of tapping her chin. “Well, there was that subspace bubble with the soap opera characters come to life. Escaping that bubble is how the crew got this new ship. But before we got the ship, we were all at Starbase. I had just joined as the new first officer, and suddenly there was the mass hallucination event caused by a fungus in the ventilation system that was amplified by ill Betazoids. Ever heard of the Human story called Alice in Wonderland? Our captain was the Queen,” she said with a laugh.
“Then there was the humanitarian supply run to a refugee planet in Romulan space. That was complicated by Starfleet sending a film crew to get footage for a promotional vide.” Dira tried desperately hard not to roll her eyes and was only slightly successful. Then more recently we were tasked with diagnosing an ambassador with a mysterious illness that most wrote off as her being hypochondriac, but was really her aide slowly poisoning her to death. That was complicated by some glittery goo in the ship’s system that caused power issues. The only other thing of note for engineering was damage in the shuttlebay that was fixed and some complicated security breaches caused by an intruder. We do’t have to go into details about that now unless you wish to. Just know that the issues were fixed.”
Captain Myqian, CO
Koria blinked, what had she gotten herself into. She had expected maybe some crazy medical rescue mission to be the interesting thing, not subspace bubbles, or fungus in the ventilation systems.
After a second she swallowed and looked back over at the Captain. “That’s okay, I can read up about some of the more recent details in the repair logs in between getting to know the ship.”
Lt Sutret - CE
Dira gazed at her, her dark eyes intense. “Oh, there’s lots there for sure. Now, hit me with your questions. I’m sure you have some,” she said, almost as a challenge, though there was a tny smile on her face.
Captain Myqian, CO
Koria eyes widened slightly before she blinked once, twice. Questions? What was she supposed to ask… Give her a day or two, maybe a week, to read through some of the more recent logs and maybe she could come up with a question, but on the spot? But she had to come up with something, the Captain was staring.
“Um… Are there any unique quirks about the ship that I should be aware of?”
Lt Sutret - CE
As much as anything, Dira was sussing out her new CE and tryign to gauge both her personality, but required social boundaries and ease of interaction. This was of course easier given that Dira was aware of Sutret’s emotions (she wasn’t wearing the headband). “Depends on what you mean by quirks? And are you referring to the ship itself, or the crew?” She gave a half-shrug.
Captain Myqian, CO
“Uh, how about the ship itself first,” Koria answered. Maybe bringing it around back to the tech would give her a chance to get herself centered again. She was well past her comfort point, but she could do this. She already had the job right? So what was the worst that could happen.
“With everything the ship has, um, gone through. Is there anything different from the standard specs I should know about?”
Lt Sutret - CE
She sort of half-shrugged, half shook her head. “Not really. Other than we renamed the Lounge Florence’s, but that’s a surface detail, not a technical one. That being said, there are tiny tweaks made to improve the performance of the various systems. Everything is documented in detail though. Other than that, we do have an R&D department and Dr. Kane’s space is modified to suit his needs. He gets a lot of latitude but he’s also conscious of the needs of the ship and won’t put anything at risk.”
Captain Myqian, CO
Koria nodded, that was good at least. She was curious what modifications had been down to Dr Kane’s lab.
“What about the crew? Anything surprises I should know about before jumping right in?”
Lt Sutret - CE
“Well, it’s a medical ship, so it really is a space travelling hospital. The crew can and does fluctuate as rotations happen, both in people’s training and career advancements. Other than that, expect the wide variety of species and personalities around you to surprise you. And I have found on the whole that the senior staff is a bit less social than I’m used to, but everyone does their jobs exceptional well and we do all look out for each other. If you have concerns, do bring them up. We will all listen.” Was that enough of a summary? Dira wasn’t sure quite how to sum up such a large crew.
Captain Myqian, CO
“Of course,” Koria said as she took it in. In some ways it was a relief if they were less social, hopefully that would reduce the overall expectations for her to socialize as well. It was a matter of time till she found out.
“I guess do you have any other questions for me Captain?”
Lt Sutret - CE
Dira shook her head. “No, there will undoubtedly be things that come up and once you’re settled we can touch base to see how things are going. For now, you should finish your boarding procedures. There’s our weekly senior staff meeting in three days, so that will give you a bit of time to get situated. BUt if anything comes up or you have any questions, give me a shout, okay?”
Captain Myqian, CO
Koria let out a mental sigh of relief. “Of course Captain. I’ll be sure to let you know if I think of anything.”
