“Damn.” Drake broke out into a run, dashing to scrub up and get into the operating theater. He went through motions he’d done more times than he could actively remember, and soon enough went in. “Dr Ch’zaraahan.” He held something back. “Well done holding down the fort. I’ll take over now, you can assist.” It would be better for the patient and Ch’zaraahan to have a trauma surgeon at work. “Give me the status, Doctor.” He ordered while doing a visual inspection of the site and checking a tricorder.

-Dr Drake Marshall

Their patient was a Betazoid male with a piece of metal sticking out of his left side. “Uhh, object penetration through the large and small intestines and it’s also putting pressure on the abdominal aorta. It hasn’t pierced it yet, but any small movement cold do so. So far there’s been no serious bleeding, but as soon as we remove the metal…” Ch’zaraahan shook his head. “I don’t know that we can work fast enough.”

~Mischief Maker

“Don’t give up while you can hear a pulse. I need you to hold the object stable. I’m going to remove it in pieces, and until we’re clear- that needs to remain still.” Drake grabbed his scalpel and settled in, glancing up to his assisting doctor, checking to see if Ch’zaraahan was ready.

“Understood.” Relieved to have someone more experienced to help, the second year resident held the protuding object firmly in his hands. He nodded.

When the metal was in a secure hold, Drake made his initial incision. He cut into the abdomen, and cut away the section between the intestine and abdominal aorta. He lifted away a small piece of metal and relieved the pressure on the crucial blood vessel. He turned his attention to the small intestine, and cut that segment separate from what Ch’zaraahan was holding steady. Then he worked to pull that segment free, chasing his work with a regenerator, trying not to let any area bleed longer than absolutely necessary.

The Betazoid’s pressure was precarious. “Pressure dropping again,” the Andorian Chan said, trying to decide if he was glad this sort of thing hadn’t happened during his intern year or not.

But as Marshall worked, there seemed to be more bleeding, but it wasn’t coming directly from where the impalement. Or rather, it was adjacent, and its source hiding.

~Mischief Maker

“If you don’t already have the crewman’s blood type, find it and run a line. Now.” Drake snapped off an order for the nurses to follow. “Doctor, we have a bleed we cannot see. We’re going to lock off the primary injury first.” Drake kept cutting and, as quickly as he could, freed the metal from the large intestine.

“We have blood ready. I’ll get it on the rapid infuser,” the nurse said, moving swiftly.

“Doctor Ch’zaraahan, pull your section free and regenerate the underlying tissue.” While his assisting physician worked, Drake searched for the hidden bleed. Stay alive, it’s almost done.

-Dr Drake Marshall

“Removing on one, two, three!” Ch’zaraahan pulled out the piece with one hand in a swift, clean motion. He immediately set the tissue regenerating to work sealing the open tissue. Still, the alert sounded.

“Pressure is still dropping,” the nurse said as she got the line hooked up. “But hopefully not for long.”

Meanwhile, Marshall’s bleed seemed to be elusive. He could see the results, but it seemed to be hiding around other organs.

~Mischief Maker

“Bring in some suction.” Drake tried to follow the flow back to the source, thinking about the path of the impalement. There were areteries and veins all throughout the abdomen, and one or two getting opened would be more than enough to create this mess. “Doctor Ch’zaraahan, give me an arterial and veinous scan, limited to the abdomen. If I can’t find it by eye, you find it on a scan.”

Sinclair, XO

Ch’zaraahan moved their scanner to show a holographic image of their patient’s vascular system. He moved it along slowly, zooming in. “There! One of the branches of the middle colic artery. Actually two. Right near where the lower right corner of the metal had stopped. If you move about five centimeters to your left and two centimeters down, you’ll probably find it.”

~Mischief Maker

“Well spotted, Doctor.” Drake moved where Ch’zaraahan indicated and set to work. “When we’re done here, we may have more casualties to deal with. Are you my second pair of hands?” When he had sealed off the wounded artery, he did one last check for problems, waiting to close until he was sure they were done.

OOC: I’m not sure if it’s appropriate for my character to be here or go with you, just trying to find the most appropriate place to slot in!

IC:

John was just doing the rounds of ICU making sure the nursing staff were all in order. Since starting the role of Head Nurse he prided himself on stepping in when required and getting his hands dirty. He found this helped moral and also kept up his nursing skills.

He overheard Doctor Marshall as he was checking in with a nearby nurse. He coughed by way of interruption.
“Excuse me Doctor Marshall.” He said in a deep voice off to the side of Drake.
“I could go with you and be your second. The nurses are all okay here and I could check in with the other Sickbays when we’re done.” He waited patiently for a response from Doctor Marshall.
