Finally, her double and a half shift was at an end. Zoi let out a long breath. Most of her day consisted of mental load, dealing with paperwork, shift changes, route changes, new protocols to implement from Star Fleet Command, and the planning sessions with her leadership teams to implement them soon on board. Her blond bunned hair was mildly askew and she looked like she desperately needed a few hours sleep.Zoi took a few moments to tidy herself up before exiting her office on Deck 10. She never liked looking disheveled in front of her team and so she smiled politely and wished everyone a good shift before taking herself to the turbolift. Her bed was practically calling her name with the song of an alluring siren. Maybe, if she was lucky, Dira would rub her back.
On the turbolift was a young ensign with red on her uniform. Zoi might recognize Kehinde Anghelescu as one of the junior helmspersons. “Commander,” they said.
Her mind was a million miles away, thinking of the soft sheets and warm heavy blanket when the whole world around her shook violently, tossing the passengers around like ragdolls. The sound of metal crashing and concussive booms were so painful in their volume one would think they had been the focal point of the explosive decompression though thankfully they were not. Lights blinked rapidly as power surged and failed. They changed from bright white to the deep dark red of emergency power lighting.

Anghelescu tried to brace themselves after they hit the side, but ended up toppling into Haven with a grunt. They pushed themselves off of the security chief. “I’m sorry, Commander. Are you alright?” they asked, checking themselves for signs of injuries.
The Ensign was light enough that the hit from them was not a problem in and of itself but it added weight to her own fall and she hit the back left side of her head and landing wrenched her neck. Zoi groaned in frustration more than pain though the pain was not insubstantial, as she lay on the floor, head against the side of the Turbolift.
=/\=Attention Decks 7, 8 and 9. Please be advised that non-essential power will be cut immediately to prevent further power surges. Take all precautions. That is for all of Decks 7, 8 and 9,=/\= GALEN’s voice said over the entire deck.
~Mischief Maker
She opened her eyes to look at the Ensign and found there were two of them. “Wow,” she said softly. “You have a twin!”
Wincing, she lifted a hand to try and touch the head injury. No blood but a knot was quickly growing and she sucked in a breathat it’s tenderness to the touch. Her brain wasn’t focusing on much else yet, feeling rattled and confused or she might be scared of how much danger they were in.
Haven, CoS
“Easy now,” Anghelescu said. “You hit your head pretty hard that I’m worried about concussion.” The pilot tilted her head to the side and frowned. “We’ve stopped. Whatever it was was enough to make even impulse a bad idea.” She got up carefully and tried the lift door. Nothing. “And we’re stuck in here, apparently. “They were stalled just below the deck opening, but depending on what was on the other side on Deck 8A itself, forcing the door and escaping that way could be risky.
Zoi would have nodded if she had not had enough wits about her to know that such a thing would cause her to injure herself more. So she simply gave a “Mrmph.” In acknowledgement of the advice and information. Her brain was slower moving than she liked.
“Hey, GALEN?”
“How might I help?” the AI said.
“Can you notify someone that we’re stuck in here? And is the deck safe on the other side of the lift exit?”
There was a pause. “Notification sent. Analysis of Deck 8A suggests that while there is life support on the other side, there is damage to the deck resulting in debris that makes a safe escape inadvisable.”
“Great,” the ensign mumbled. Kehinde looked at Zoi. “How do you feel about waiting it out, Commander? We could try to escape through the lift shaft, but not if you’re going to pass out on me.”
~Mischief Maker
In the time that the Ensign had taken to examine their situation and speak with Galen, she took stock of her body. Making small movements to test out her mobility and the extent of injury. Her head hurt fiercely and she was nauseous from the hit. Her neck was just as angry as her head though she hoped nothing too serious there.
The explosion she heard was likely decompression and it was seriously nearby. She didn’t like being this close. A cascade of decompressions in the surrounding areas could happen, if shields didn’t hold.
She opened her eyes to look at the young Ensign. “We are safe here for now so waiting it out is the best idea, but the risk is high in either scenario. If we stay. Shields could fail and we could be a part of another decompression. I’m not sure how near we are to the damage. If we hoof it, I could exacerbate my injury.”
“GALEN, how close is the turbolift to the decompression?”
Haven, CoS
“32 meters,” GALEN replied.
Anghelescu blew out a breath. “Too close for comfort but far enough away to not be in the immediate path of chaos. Awesome,” she said with some bitterness. “And yeah, I’m not really keen on making you worse.” She tilted her head upwards, even though there was no logical reason to change her focus. It just made it less stange to talk to a disembodied voice. “GALEN, also notify Sickbay that we need medical assistance as well. Head injury in the very least.”
~Mischief Maker
32 meters. She grimaced. No definitely not as good as she had hoped, but also not as dangerous as she had feared. Zoi almost reached out telepathically to Dira but stopped herself and clamped down on her control. The last thing the Captain needed was for her partner to distract her from the multitude of tasks that must be in front of her.
“Okay, so we wait. If however, the danger comes any closer, we risk my injury worsening and get ourselves out of here. Make a break for it?” She wondered where that idiom had come from and why it was used even though it made no logical sense to her.
“Yeah, we might have to,” she replied, looking up at the ceiling of the turbolift and frowning. How they would manage that, she wasn’t sure, but they would deal with it then if it became their reality.
Perhaps she simply couldn’t make sense of it at the moment given her rather injured brain. “So tell me about yourself Ensign. Might as well fill the time as pleasantly as possible.” Though the Ensign had seemed to keep their head on their shoulders well enough, waiting for help could fray even the calmest of nerves.
Haven, CoS
Kehinde adjusted her spot on the floor with one knee bent upright and the other tucked flat on the floor. She braced her arm on her knee. “Well, I joined the Ogawa just before we went to Unroth III. I love flying. There’s something kind of amazing about navigating a large vessel through space, even if the computer does most of the work on good days. It’s the days that aren’t so good that I love training for.” She gave a lopsided smile. “My mama always accused me of being an adrenaline junkie.”

In secondary sickbay GALEN’s voice sounded. “EMERGENCY NEDICAL TEAM NEEDED DECK 8A AFT TURBOLIFT. HEAD INJURY. CREW IS TRAPPED IN THE LIFT.” The message repeated until acknowledged.
Solal was the next up in rotation to go out. Grabbing a kit and his team they took the Jeffries tubes to the access hatch for the lift. It took a moment to climb past and to the emergency hatch on the roof. The hatch released with a bit of pressure and Solal stuck his head in. “This is Doctor Solal. What is your condition?” The half Vulcan doctor asked flatly, though there was a hint of concern in his eyes.
~ Solal
“I’m alright,” the ensign said, looking up with relief. “But Commander Haven hit her head pretty hard. We didn’t want to move far if we didn’t have to.”
~Mischief Maker
“A logical thought,” came the doctor’s voice. “Can you tell me a little about the Commander’s condition? Is she coherent, conscious? Does she have any memory loss, trouble focusing or thinking?” He asked, assessing whether he could wait for engineering to get the lift moving or he needed to call for a rescue or get down there.
~ Solal
Zoi smiled softly. “I am indeed coherent and conscious Doctor. I do not believe I have had any memory loss but focus and thinking are slower and more effort than usual. I also tweaked my neck. I do not believe it is bad but I also am no expert on the spine. I suspect some strained musculature.”
Haven,CoS
“I’m worried about concussion,” Kehinde said. “How do we want to handle this?” she added, looking up at Solal on top of the lift from her place sitting on the floor of the turbolift car. In her mind, it wasn’t so simple as him coming down there (though that would be easier right now) and her trying to help Haven up. She doubted the COS could climb up the lift shaft, even if they managed to get to the roof with help.
~Mischief Maker
“If your condition seems stable, I would like to keep your movement to a minimum, in case that neck injury is worse than it feels like it is, and call engineering to get this lift moving. Having the Commander attempt to climb out of there is not a good idea with a suspected concussion.”
~ Solal
Ensign Anghelescu frowned. “They might be a little busy what with the explosion. They’re prioritizing power and while turbolifts are important, it might be more tricky in the vicinity of the explosion. GALEN told us we’re 32 metres from the decompression. They’re going to have the emergency bulkheads up everywhere.”
~Mischief Maker
What did Solal know? He wasn’t an engineer. Okay, remove that as a possibility… “Having her climb with a concussion… She could hit her head and die.” He wished he had the knowledge to weigh the risk of them staying there. “I think I should come down and assess both of your conditions myself.”
~ Solal
“Sounds like a plan,” Kehinde said, pushing herself to her feet. She reached up a hand. “Pass me your med kit and then you can slip down. I’ll move to the side out of your way.”
Haven was already off to the side, so at least they didn’t have to move her. The pilot smirked at Zoi, though it was weary. “Bet no one had this on their Ogawa bingo card.”
~Mischief Maker
Solal dropped his med kit down to her. Then maneuvered to let his legs go down first, and dropped down the shaft into the elevator. 185 pounds of Vulcan landing in it, he hoped the elevator was stable. “There is no Ogawa bingo. That would be illogical.”
~ Solal
“It’s not meant to be. It’s a silly game,” Kehinde said as she moved out of the way so he could examine Haven.
