“Damn.” Drake broke out into a run, dashing to scrub up and get into the operating theater. He went through motions he’d done more times than he could actively remember, and soon enough went in. “Dr Ch’zaraahan.” He held something back. “Well done holding down the fort. I’ll take over now, you can assist.” It would be better for the patient and Ch’zaraahan to have a trauma surgeon at work. “Give me the status, Doctor.” He ordered while doing a visual inspection of the site and checking a tricorder.

Their patient was a Betazoid male with a piece of metal sticking out of his left side. “Uhh, object penetration through the large and small intestines and it’s also putting pressure on the abdominal aorta. It hasn’t pierced it yet, but any small movement cold do so. So far there’s been no serious bleeding, but as soon as we remove the metal…” Ch’zaraahan shook his head. “I don’t know that we can work fast enough.”

“Don’t give up while you can hear a pulse. I need you to hold the object stable. I’m going to remove it in pieces, and until we’re clear- that needs to remain still.” Drake grabbed his scalpel and settled in, glancing up to his assisting doctor, checking to see if Ch’zaraahan was ready.

“Understood.” Relieved to have someone more experienced to help, the second year resident held the protuding object firmly in his hands. He nodded.

When the metal was in a secure hold, Drake made his initial incision. He cut into the abdomen, and cut away the section between the intestine and abdominal aorta. He lifted away a small piece of metal and relieved the pressure on the crucial blood vessel. He turned his attention to the small intestine, and cut that segment separate from what Ch’zaraahan was holding steady. Then he worked to pull that segment free, chasing his work with a regenerator, trying not to let any area bleed longer than absolutely necessary.

The Betazoid’s pressure was precarious. “Pressure dropping again,” the Andorian Chan said, trying to decide if he was glad this sort of thing hadn’t happened during his intern year or not.

But as Marshall worked, there seemed to be more bleeding, but it wasn’t coming directly from where the impalement. Or rather, it was adjacent, and its source hiding.
