This was not your typical department head check-in. Those were almost prescriptive, simple. As Cori came to stand at the door of the Chief Science Officer, she felt nerves swirl in her gut. She was in civilian attire (black trousers and a teal knit tunic) and it was her way of mimicking a uniform. She could technically wear one, but she wasn’t cleared for duty… yet. Soon though.

Tapping a PADD against her thigh she reached out and pressed the chime.

“Come on in.” A voice from inside called out as the doors slid open. Inside a man with a Mediterranean complexion was sitting at the desk while reading from the nearby terminal. The stuff on his desk was in a state of what one might describe as controlled chaos. Two chairs was situated in front of the desk.

CSO Petrakos

Dalton stepped in and took in the office and the man with her rather vivid blue eyes. She pulled her long raven hair over one shoulder and stood tall. “Lieutenant Petrakos? I’m Lieutenant Corinne Dalton, a possible new member of your department. Do you have some time to chat?”

Achilleas turned his attention to the newcomer before he gestured to one of the chairs. “I do. Please have a seat Lieutenant.” He waited a beat for her to get seated before he followed up with a question. “What do you mean by a possible new member?”

CSO Petrakos

Cori studied him for a moment. “Well, it depends on if your department ends up being the right place. I have other options if you, or we, decide that that would be better, but given my original background was in science, it made sense to start there.” She slide the PADD over to him. “My personnel file. By all means, take a few minutes to read. I… think it will be helpful.”

While her file read as if it was straightforward, the content was anything but. That and there were quite a few bits that were classified or the details were more lacking than one might expect for someone who had technically been in Starfleet as long as she had.

Achilleas took the PaDD and took a couple minutes to go over it. He noted the peculiar discrepancies and gaps. He set the PaDD down onto the desk and looked Dalton over. “I don’t have any objections to you joining the department. I did see some peculiar entries in your file but I very much doubt the Captain would let you aboard if any of it was an issue.” He paused a moment and shifted his demeanor to being a bit more friendly. “What is it you’d like to accomplish in the science department?”

For a moment, Cori just stared at him. Then she sighed and shook her head. “I don’t know. I was a fairly young officer when I boarded the Saracen and while I hadn’t been a half-bad scientist, I wasn’t going to win any awards for research. And my life since then hasn’t exactly been about science per say.” More like she was the research. “I have a more than average knowledge of medicine and physiology, which compliments my original major in biology. But to be honest, Lieutenant, I’ve not been an active scientist in many years. I was about to go talk to our Chief Science Officer about getting back into the labs but then I was… relocated. And now I’m here after an unexpected absence. So, I have no predefined idea about what any of this should be. I’m just trying to to sort out the next steps of a trye of life I didn’t expect I’d ever have again.”

Achilleas nodded slowly at Corinne’s explanation. “Trying to find your place after everything gets upended can certainly be a difficult and long journey. Having a good knowledge set of medicine will definitely be helpful on a medical cruiser, so perhaps we can have you liaising with medical when they need our department’s assistance. For the rest of the time I would expect you to settle in, familiarize yourself with the other officers in the department, and begin outlining a research path or experiment that you want to pursue. On a medical ship we tend to be… underutilized is perhaps a bit harsh, but there is some hurry up and wait involved. When our skills are necessary we will be stressed and busy beyond belief but for the rest of the time we need to have projects to keep our skills sharp. Does that make sense?”

CSO Petrakos

Cori nodded. “Yes, it does. I suppose I don’t even know where to start when it comes to research. I don’t have any particular interest. At least I don’t think so.” Nothing immediately came to mind, so she figured it was going to be a weird sort of process waiting for inspiration to hit her.

Achilleas chuckled. “I’m not expecting anything grand or overly complicated. It’s perfectly acceptable to pick a direction initially but change your focus if it doesn’t interest or motivate you. For the first little bit while you’re familiarizing yourself with the other officers you can observe and ask to participate in their projects to get an idea of what’s being worked on. That might give you an idea or at the very least the start of one.”

She nodded. “Sounds pretty reasonable.” Despite the peculiarities of her record, she was glad he seemed to just go with everything. Aspects of her recovery were hard enough and she just wanted this part to be easier. “I’m not cleared for full duty yet, but shadowing people isn’t strenuous and I have quarters now. How about I do a couple hours at a time and see how things go. My med team will tell me if I’m overdoing it, but honestly at this point I think we’re wanting to push my body at least a little bit.”
