Geoyton’s eyes narrowed at the Ogawa’s Commander, but he didn’t say a word before turning and walking to the transporter room.
In the Conference Room, Kane was drinking coffee with his feet up on the table. As Dira walked in he smiled slightly and said “Admiral Derrik K. Groyton, Star Fleet Medical Research and Development. Not a doctor, an engineer. Specialization was biomedical engineering. That was his degree, and back in the day he was apparently something else. Gifted, even. But he got more involved in Fleet politics than the actual work and stopped doing anything of note about twenty years ago. Since then he has just commandeered projects that catch his eye and he slaps his name on ‘em and keeps his ‘rep’ solid. He is a below average officer with mediocre exam scores and bland, boring evaluations. Made Admiral off the hard work and intelligence of others and didn’t share credit.” He took a sip of coffee and said “And he knows me. Or, he should. He’s met me twice before. I must be slipping. I thought I was unforgettable.”

Dira snorted as she grabbed fresh coffee and sat down beside Solomon. “Well, I think he’ll remember this ship. I might have erred a bit on the side of insubordination, but don’t worry, if he complains, I’ll have a formal complaint ready to go about his jerkish behaviour. I told him so as well,” she said, her dark eyes gleaming as she lifted the mug to her lips.

Kane half-smiled. “Doubt he’ll do anything. He tries not to draw too much attention except for project successes. Too many eyes on him and someone might actually find out he’s a fraud.”

“Well, I think I can make sure that the work done on the Ogawa and the people who are actually involved in it are appropriately acknowledged. I happen to know a good many people at Starfleet Medical and something about the fourth pip tends to get people’s attention more these days. I don’t mind throwing my weight around when it’s useful to do so. My reputation can stand up to his just fine.”

Kane shrugged and took a drink. “It should be pretty straight-forward. I’ll write up some research protocols and test parameters for what the things will need to do to put them through their paces. If they pass that, then we’ll try to break them and see what their threshold’s are. That will really tick off Groyton. His has a habit of not quite being as… ‘thorough’… as he maybe should be when it comes to his pet projects. Hasn’t bit him in the ass yet, but it will.”

She snorted. “It always does eventually. Carelessness rarely goes well in the long run.” Dira sat back in her chair. “Anything else we need to consider?”

Kane thought for a minute and then said “Not off the top of my head, no.” and he pulled his feet off the table. “But I am gonna triple copy every single file we create on the thing with everyone’s name embedded at the kernal level of coding. That way when he screws us, and he will, we can nail his ass to the proverbial wall.” He stood up and said “I can’t stand that guy. It’ll be nice to sucker punch him… figuratively, of course. Wouldn’t want you to have to pop me in the brig again.” and he jerked his chin at her in farewell and started walking to the door.
